About the workshop leader
Heen is a London based music producer, artist and NFT educator.
As a creator himself, he is a classically trained pianist who has spent his life exploring sonic possibilities with classical, jazz, electronic and cinematic music. He joined ROLI as a full time product specialist after studying a degree in Computer Science, and since then have continued to combine his passions to his growing portfolio.
Outside of ROLI, he is currently co-running Originally:Creative – a digital marketing consultancy for creatives, with a mission to help creators navigate & win in the digital space. So far they have worked with artists including: Tomfoolery, Wharf, CRISP&CLASSY… as well as working closely with Jordan Rudess on his upcoming NFT project.

Digging deeper into Flora for monome norns – On-demand
Level: Some experience of norns required
In the second Flora workshop, you will build your own custom L-system algorithms using Flora’s UI and sequence the script using the preset (PSET) sequencer. The script’s community gardening feature will also be covered to give you a new way to share your sequences with a worldwide audience.
By the end of the second workshop, you will be able to:

An introduction to Flora for monome norns – On-demand
Level: Some experience of norns required
Flora is an L-systems sequencer and bandpass-filtered sawtooth engine for monome norns. In this workshop you will learn how L-system algorithms are used to produce musical sequences while exploring the script’s UI and features.
By the end of the first workshop, you will be able to:

Livestream: Nestup – A Language for Musical Rhythms

In this livestreamed interview, we will speak with Sam Tarakajian and Alex Van Gils, who’ve built a fantastic live-coding environment that works within an Ableton Live device called Nestup.
The programs we use to make music have a lot of implicit decisions baked into them, especially in their graphical interfaces. Nestup began as a thought experiment, trying to see if embedding a text editor inside Live could open up new creative possibilities. We think the answer is that yes, text can work well alongside a piano roll and a traditional musical score, as a concise and expressive way to define complex rhythms.
With Nestup, you define for yourself any size of rhythmic unit, any sort of rhythmic subdivision, and with any scaling factor. These language features open your rhythm programming up to musical ideas such as metric modulation, nested tuplets, complex polyrhythm, and more. Rhythms from musical styles which would have been prohibitively difficult to program in a DAW can therefore be rendered in MIDI, such as rhythms from Armenian folk musics or “new complexity” compositions.
Overview of speakers
Sam is a Brooklyn based developer and creative coder. Sam works for Cycling ‘74 and develops independent projects at Cutelab NYC. Alex is a composer, performer, and generative video artist based in Brooklyn.
Sam and Alex have been making art with music and code together for over 10 years, beginning with a composition for double bass and Nintendo Wiimote while undergraduates and continuing to include electroacoustic compositions, live AR performance art, installation art, Max4Live devices, and now Nestup, the domain-specific language for musical rhythms.

Livestream: TidalCycles – growing a language for algorithmic pattern

In this livestreamed interview, Alex McLean retraces the history and intent that prompted him to develop TidalCycles alongside ‘Algorave’ live performance events, contributing to establish Live Coding as an art discipline.
Alex started TidalCycles project for exploring musical patterns in 2009, and it is now a healthy free/open-source software project and among the most well-known live coding environments for music.
TidalCycles represents musical patterns as a function of time, making them easy to make, combine and transform. It is generally partnered with the SuperDirt hybrid synthesiser/sampler, created by Julian Rohrhuber using SuperCollider.
Culturally, TidalCycles is tightly linked to Algorave, a movement created by Alex McLean and Nick Collins in 2011, where musicians and VJs make algorithms to dance to.

Overview of speaker
Alex McLean is a musician and researcher based in Sheffield UK. As well as working on TidalCycles, he also researches algorithmic patterns in ancient weaving, as part of the PENELOPE project based in Deutsches Museum, Munich. He has organised hundreds of events in the digital arts, including the annual AlgoMech festival of Algorithmic and Mechanical Movement. Alex co-founded the international conferences on live coding and live interfaces, and co-edited the Oxford Handbook of Algorithmic Music. As live coder has performed worldwide, including Sonar, No Bounds, Ars Electronica, Bluedot and Glastonbury festivals.
Bishi: a journey in music & technology
Bishi‘s talk explores her journey in music & technology, stemming from her cultural roots, charting the steps between being a musician, composer & performer to founder and technologist. The talk will feature some live Sitar midi-mapping performance.
Singer, electronic rock- sitarist, Composer, producer and performer BISHI was born in London of Bengali heritage. A multi-instrumentalist, BISHI received musical training in both Hindustani and Western Classical styles, including the study of the sitar under Gaurav Mazumdar a senior disciple of Ravi Shankar.
She has written & recorded two albums, produced by Matthew Hardern: Nights at The Circus and Albion Voice. Bishi co-produced her third album, ‘Let My Country Awake,’ with Jeff Cook.
Bishi is the founder of WITCiH: The Women in Technology Creative Industries Hub, a platform elevating Women & Non-Binary in tech, through commissions, performances & podcasts. She fronted a documentary for BBC Radio 4 exploring the future of technology in music.
Bishi’s collaborations & commissions for the stage have included The London Symphony Orchestra, The Kronos Quartet, Yoko Ono’s Meltdown, The Science Gallery, Nick Knight’s Showstudio & session work with Sean Ono Lennon, Luke Vibert, Richard Norris, Daphne Guinness & Tony Visconti. Bishi was recently a Tanpura soloist for the City of London Sinfonia, performing Jonny Greenwood’s ‘Water.’
Bishi was lead commissioned artist for Delia Derbyshire Day, who commissioned her to compose a piece of music, celebrating 50 years of White Noise ‘An Electric Storm.’ This resulted in ‘The Telescope Eye,’ an EP she co-produced with Richard Norris. Bishi fronted a documentary for Radio 4 centred around the groundbreaking tech company, ROLI. Her most recent EP ‘Of Rituals & Rites, with composer, Neil Kaczor is out on March 20th 2020, for Spring Equinox.
