Join us for the 2nd live show where members of the Music Hackspace community will perform, collaborate and be interviewed.

  • Tobi Hunke: is a professional drummer and music producer. He is an educator and Max for live programmer who releases his work on the website AbletonDrummer.com . Tobi teaches drumming and music production to classes, as well as in one on one sessions. He has developed several Max for Live devices which are enabling drummers to play melodies and chords via acoustic/electronic drums which he is using for his own musical performances. https://blog.abletondrummer.com/about/ 
  • Melody Loveless – will be sharing music that she made featuring live vocal sampling, Sonic Pi and Max/MSP. Melody is an artist, creative technologist, and educator based in Brooklyn, NYC. Her work ranges from live coding performance, generative sound installations, multisensory performance, and more. 
  • Obscenity State: – Nilly Brook a musician, producer and audio-visual performer, will be performing 2 tracks from her yet to be released EP alongside a live audio-visual TouchDesigner performance. Nilly lectures various visual technologies across a number of institutions including: The National Film and Television School, Central Saint Martins, Wimbledon School of Art, London South Bank University.

Join the second in an occasional series that showcases musical and visual performances and collaborations from members of the Music Hackspace community. After each performance, the practitioners are interviewed about their methodology. Watch the event live from our social media channels.

What is Jamspace?

Jamspace is an occasional / monthly series that showcases audio and visual performances and collaborations from members of the Music Hackspace community. We aim to create an online space in which community members can showcase their creative practice – be it musical, visual, audio, generative, traditional or experimental pieces.

How does it work?

Jamspace is hosted live by Music Hackspace Workshop Leader Ned Rush. Pre-composed performance videos are streamed and after each performance, the practitioners are interviewed live by Ned about their methodology. Anyone can watch the events live for free from our social media channels. Want to pose a question for the interview? You can ask questions in the chat on social media on the day.

Want to show off your work for the next Jamspace? 

Jamspace is hosted by Music Hackspace Workshop Leaders Phelan Kane and Ned Rush. 

Your piece could be anything that demonstrates creative use of technology in the arts. Performance to a camera is not a prerequisite – screen capture, generative visuals, green screen, Max, Jitter, video filters, VJ, sonificiations, Ableton Live and /or TouchDesigner created content is perfect. Anyone from the community can submit, be it student, workshop leader or alumni!

Getting confident with Max – September series

Dates & Times: Tuesdays 21st & 28th September + 5th & 12th October – 6pm GMT / 7pm CET / 10am PST / 1pm EST

Level: Beginner

Cycling 74’s Max / MSP offers a vast playground of programming opportunities to create your own sound design and multimedia applications. In this workshop you will build a patch using items from the Max tool bar such as Beap and Vizzie as well using media from your own collection, plus explore ways to open up, reverse engineer and modify existing resources within the Max application.

Series Learning Outcomes

By the end of this series a successful student will be able to:

  • Confidently navigate the Max environment to quickly gain access to content and learning resources.
  • Deploy resources into a patch.
  • Connect and explore these resources to develop ideas for sound and media design, composition and performance.
  • Navigate the help file system and reverse engineer existing content in the Max application.

Session Study Topics

  • The Tools available in a Max such as Beap and Vizzie modules.
  • Playlists and drag and drop media.
  • Bpatches, prototypes and snippets.
  • The helpfile system.

Max meetup – August 14th

Meetups are a great way to meet and be inspired by the Max community.

What to expect? 

The meetup runs via Zoom and will be approx. 2-hours in length.

This session will feature presentations from expert practitioners.

  • Join a room on topics of your choice

  • Show other participants your projects, ask for help, or help others out

  • Meet peers in the chill-out breakout room

Build your own modular synth with MSP – On-demand

Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Learn to program patches with MSP to make a custom modular environment.

Cycling 74’s Max / MSP offers a vast playground of programming opportunities to create your own synthesis devices. In this series you will build custom modules to create your own modular synthesis environment. This series aims to provide you with suitable skills to begin exploring synthesis and UI design in the Max MSP environment.

Series Learning Outcomes

By the end of the series a successful student will be able to:

  • Build oscillator and filter networks with MSP objects

  • Build modulation patches with MSP objects

  • Build step sequencers with Max and MSP objects

  • Explore use of signal routing in interesting and creative ways using MSP objects.

  • Build custom modules using UI objects and bpatchers

Abstract Performance in Ableton and Max For Live – On demand

Level: Intermediate

Ableton and Cycling 74’s Max For Live offer a vast playground of opportunities to create unique and rich electronic music performances. In this workshop you will create a performance instrument. This workshop aims to provide you with suitable skills to begin exploring improvised performance in Ableton Live and Max For Live.

Session Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session a successful student will be able to:

  • Discuss various forms of performance approaches in Ableton and Max For Live plus their advantages and weaknesses.

  • Explore one approach that gives most flexibility and ease for performing.

  • Gather assets in Ableton and Max For Live to use in the performance and how to fit them into our chosen approach.

  • Develop the approach into a complex performance orientated instrument based in the Ableton and Max For Live Environments

  • Deploy Ableton and Max For Live devices to create a musical performance.
  • Load and organize sounds into Ableton’s Drum Rack.
  • Enhance the performability of our instrument using midi processes.

Abstract Composition in Ableton and Max For Live – On demand

Level: Intermediate

Ableton and Cycling 74’s Max For Live offer a vast playground of programming opportunities to create unique compositions and rich sound designs. In this workshop you will create musical and sonic ideas using abstract techniques of composition. This workshop aims to provide you with suitable skills to begin exploring generative composition and complex sound design.

Session Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session a successful student will be able to:

  • Discuss the relevance of using generative processes in certain musical contexts.

  • Explore how we can use these processes to create musical ideas.

  • Look at ways to capture these ideas to use for future projects.

  • Exploring various sound design techniques to add colour and shape.

Session Study Topics

  • Deploy Ableton and Max For Live devices to generate musical content.
  • Develop this content with various devices such as instruments and effects.
  • Capture, edit and consolidate the content.
    • Reflect on the content we created and discuss ways to develop the project further.

Max meetup – Europe Edition 2

Overview

Join the Max meetup to share ideas and learn with other artists, coders and performers. Showcase your patches, pair with others to learn together, get help for a school assignment, or discover new things.

The meetup runs via Zoom. The main session features short presentations from Max users. Breakout rooms are created on the spot on specific topics, and you can request a new topic at any time.

 In the breakout rooms, you can share your screen to show other participants something you’re working on, ask for help, or help someone else.

In this workshop you will build your own synthesis device that utilizes a Physical Modelling architecture. This workshop aims to provide you with suitable skills to begin exploring Physical Modelling synthesis devices in the Max MSP environment.
