As part of our 2018 programme, we are pleased to introduce new opportunities for artists, musicians and practitioners working with sound, art and music technology. The opportunity is focused on artistic development, and the successful applicant will be encouraged to explore their ideas, creative practice, and to develop their skills through connecting with and contributing to the Music Hackspace community. We encourage applications from practitioners using open source technologies and DIY methodologies, looking to build new instruments, installations and sound based works.

Residency timeline: 1 May 2018 – 31 July 2018

Application Deadline: 9am, 9 April 2018

The selected artist will spend time engaging with members of Music Hackspace, their projects, research, outreach work, and the existing Music Hackspace public programme at Somerset House Studios, organised around newly devised artist talks, meet-ups and workshops.

The selected artist will become a MHS member for a duration of 3 months (May-July 2018) with a fee and production budget of £1,000, with access to our facilities (tools, equipment and team resources), and programming opportunities in the MHS public programme. This can include:

Context

Music Hackspace is a platform for experimenting and interacting with sound and technology. We incorporate diverse methodologies and aim to create an open playground and exchange of ideas and sounds that embraces new and old technologies. Newly available open source platforms, both hardware and software, are granting far wider accessibility to new interactions with music and audio than have not been possible before. It’s with these technologies that we base our programme of workshops, artist talks and meetups, and hope to encourage people of all backgrounds and skill levels to create and engage with music in previously unrealised ways.

From 2017 to mid 2019, Music Hackspace is a resident of Somerset House Studios and over this time holds a studio space in the Studio’s vaults. Somerset House Studios is an experimental workspace in the centre of London connecting artists, makers and thinkers with audiences. The Studios are a platform for the development of new creative projects and collaboration, promoting work that pushes bold ideas, engages with urgent issues and pioneers new technologies.

This artist development opportunity is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Selection Process

The artist will be selected on the basis of their application. Selection will be undertaken by Music Hackspace staff in collaboration with Somerset House Studios. The successful artist will be notified by Monday 16th April 2018. We may be in touch with applicants prior to this date if we have any questions or require any further information.
