Course overview

The meetup will be hosted at UCL Here East Campus in Olympic park for those who would like to come and watch in person.

The Interactive Architecture Lab at UCL is a group of artists, architects and engineers engaged in academic research activities, public art commissions and industry collaborations. At the heart of the Lab is the 15 month Masters programme March Design for Performance & Interaction which gives students an opportunity to exploit the potential of new sensing, computation, networked and responsive technologies to imagine, build and test new spaces of performance & interaction.

Time of meetup: 4pm UK, 5pm Berlin, 8am LA, 11am NYC

Speakers & presentations

  • Sherry Yang

Sherry Yang is a designer with an interdisciplinary background in architecture, installation design and XR design. She obtained her bachelor's degree in Architectural Design from the University of Dundee and Wuhan University. She currently studies Design for performance and interaction (MArch) at the Bartlett School of Architecture. Passionate about Experience design in the XR world, and creating better connections with oneself and with others in the virtual world, Sherry is working on an XR project that allows players to experience virtual ‘self-touch’.

  • Luyang Zou

Luyang Zou, based in London, who is a new media artist, interaction designer, and architect. After graduated from Master of Architecture Design for Performance and Interaction, Bartlett, University College London, he is now working in Arup Lighting team as a digital art designer. In addition, with the enthusiasm of sharing knowledge, he feedback and teach in his graduated UCL programme as a part-time tutor, who leads visual and coding workshop. Coming from architectural background, his digital art always emphasise spatiality, rhythm and immersion. Also, details, structures and materials are reflected on his installation art. He believes that bring in interactivity, perception and activity can bring life to arts, since art and architecture are not simply about space and form, but also about event, action and what happens in space.

  • Hanzo Schwarz

Hanzo Schwarz is a German visual artist and multidisciplinary designer based in London. Since 2011, he has been the founder and creative director of 'Init Studio'. Projects span across various disciplines, from graphic design, coding, animations and motion graphics. His main focus is on audiovisual designs, creating real-time content for events and installations. His creative process explores the connection between sound and visuals. The results are a combination of mesmerising shapes and forms generated in real-time, to immerse the viewer in a controlled chaos of organic nature. His work can be experienced within music and art events, club nights and festivals, in the form of live performances or site-specific installations.

  • Ian Callender

Ian Callender is a New York City-based artist and designer exploring the intersection of the built environment and digital technologies. His work challenges traditional dialectical oppositions of structured / organic, form / un-form, and digital / literal. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in architectural history from Brown University and is currently pursuing a Master of Architecture at Columbia University GSAPP. His work has been presented at conferences such as ISEA and the Media Architecture Biennale; recognized by the Architizer, the Art Directors Club, and iF Design; covered by ArchDaily, Hyperallergic, and designboom; and exhibited internationally.
