Open Source: What is ppooll?

Membership plan: Going Deeper | Topics: Music Production

Course overview

ppooll can be difficult to define, but, fundamentally, it is a versatile open-source DSP environment built from Max, which allows for audio signal processing, performance and routing without prerequisite knowledge of Max. It contains more than 50 modules for looping, synthesis, effects & more. Those who know how to use it are capable of making stunningly beautiful music with an idiosyncratic flair, as demonstrated by artists such as Tim Hecker, Oneohtrix Point Never, and FENNESZ.

In this Open Source session, Joe Steccato demonstrates some of the possibilities of ppooll by creating music on the fly. He answers questions about this music environment and discusses its musical potential.

Who is this session for?

  • Experimental Musicians: Those interested in exploring unique, non-traditional soundscapes and pushing the boundaries of digital audio processing.
  • Electronic Music Producers: Creators looking for versatile tools to add idiosyncratic flair to their music, inspired by artists like Tim Hecker and Oneohtrix Point Never.
  • Sound Designers and Audio Engineers: Individuals aiming to expand their toolkit with customizable, open-source DSP modules for live performance and intricate sound routing.
