SUMMARY:Rebel Technology Workshop - DIY Eurorack Modular Synth
DESCRIPTION:Build your own Rebel Technology synthesizer at the Music Hackspace! \nDate: Sunday 13th March\, 11am-7pm \nLocation: Music Hackspace LimeWharf\, Vyner Street\, London\, E2 9DJ \nThe workshop is free of charge\, you only pay for what you build and take home with you. It’s relatively easy\, no previous soldering experience is required. If you are a keen solderer you should be able to build two modules in one day. We will be on hand to help throughout\, should you have any problems. \nPeople of all ages and abilities are welcome\, under 12s should be accompanied by an adult. \nREGISTRATION. Please note a minimum number of participants is required for this workshop to take place\, so please book your place asap! The booking fee will be deducted during the workshop from the price of the kit of your choice. \n\n\nBuy Rebel Technology Workshop – DIY Eurorack Modular Synth\, Sunday 13th March \nModule Details: \n1. Stoicheia : dual Euclidean gate sequencer 90 GBP \nΣτοιχεῖα is our famous Euclidean gate sequencer. It generates rhythmic trigger sequences\, from very simple beats to complex polyrhythms. Never boring\, always musical. \n2. Logoi : voltage controlled clock divider and delay 95 GBP \nΛόγοι is a voltage controlled clock divider\, counter\, and delay. It subdivides and adds time\, creating organic\, evolving signatures. Λόγοι brings movement and life to the trigger signal\, from a subtle swing to bizarrely complex and intricate rhythms. \n3. Klasmata : voltage controlled Euclidean gate sequencer 95 GBP \nΚλάσματα is a single channel\, voltage controlled version of Στοιχεῖα. It offers a range of 1-32 steps\, opening up more possibilities for complex patterns. With voltage controlled sequence length and fills\, Κλάσματα transposes\, shifts and modulates rhythmic patterns. \n4. PowerKit : small PSU 45 GBP (AC adaptor £10 extra) \nCombined busboard and power supply. +12/-12/+5v rails\, 200mA per rail. Compact and suitable for small to medium sized cases. Powered with external AC adaptor (not included\, available for £10 extra). \n5. Phoreo module : brand new (not yet released!) 95 GBP \nφορέω is a multiplier\, repeater and modulator. It packs three different trigger processing functions: \n– modulate pulse width from 0 to 100% \n– multiply rate by 1 to 16 times \n– repeat trigger 1 to 16 times \nAll three functions have CV control and dedicated inputs and outputs. By combining the multiply and repeat functions you get a burst generator: fully CV controlled and perfect for drum rolls\, arpeggios and for injecting life and movement in hats\, beats and synth lines. Go on\, give us a snare rush! \nPhoreo is 10HP wide\, requires +5v\, and is the new addition to our Euclidean series of trigger processors. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Phoreo (brand new!)\n \n \n \n \n \n Klasmata\n \n \n \n \n \n Logoi\n \n \n \n \n \n Stoicheia\n \n \n\nIf you have any questions please email us at workshops@stagingmhs.local \n  \nThis programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England

SUMMARY:Magnetic Signals and Radiophonic Soundscapes Workshop – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016
DESCRIPTION:Music Hackspace presents: Magnetic Signals and Radiophonic Soundscapes Workshop\nPart of the new series of workshops “Sound Unfolded” \nLocation: Hub 67 – 67 Rothbury Road. London E9 5HA (Hackney Wick station)\nWhen: Sat 26th March 12 to 4 pm\nBookings: 50 GBP \n  \n\n\nBuy Magnetic Signals and Radiophonic Soundscapes Workshop – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016 \nJoin sonic adventurer Dan Tapper to discover a world of sound inaudible to our naked ear. The workshop involves creating a large wire loop antenna to tap into the electromagnetic spectrum allowing us to listen to a variety of strange and exciting sounds; from natural radio emanating from lightning and more exotic sources in the VLF band to the electromagnetic saturation of man made technology generated from household appliances\, the London Underground and the electric grid. \n  \nThe workshop will involve creating large loop antenna coils to allow these electromagnetic sounds to be heard as well as looking at the basic theory of how the antennas work\, how best to record and amplify signals and how these sounds can be used in an artistic context. \n  \nThe workshop will be lead by artist Dan Tapper\, who’s been researching Very Low Frequency (VLF) electromagnetic sound for the past three years and utilizing this rich sonic environment to create installations\, radio works and compositions. This interest has led him to publish two editions of “VLF: A Sound Artist’s Guide” which provides information for artists and enthusiasts new to the scene to begin their own sonic journeys with electromagnetic sound. \n  \nWorkshop attendees take home: \n\nYour own loop antenna\, built during the day\nA PDF version of “VLF: A Sound Artist’s Guide”\nSome Call it Noise – an audio-documentary developed as an artistic and informative introduction to the sounds of VLF.\nSeveral maxMSP patches developed for artistically working with and filtering electromagnetic audio.\n\n  \n  \nThis workshop is part of the workshop series ¨Sound Unfolded¨\, curated by Susanna Garcia. \nSound Unfolded brings together action-based ideas about sound. It proposes an exploration of the relationships we can establish with sound through the act of making. To patch\, to code\, to reveal\, to sonify. This is a workshop series about modular synths\, audio synthesis\, the electromagnetic spectrum\, the transmission of sound and the digital. \nFor any enquiries please email workshops@stagingmhs.local \n  \n\n\nBuy Magnetic Signals and Radiophonic Soundscapes Workshop – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016 \n  \nThis programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Hacking Electronic Music Toys / Circuit bending workshop with Tasos Stamou
DESCRIPTION:Introductory circuit bending workshop teaching all the necessary techniques for designing and making experimental electronic music interfaces out of recycled material. Participant will have the chance to learn all the necessary tricks\, experiment with guidance from the workshop leader and design their own electronic instrument. Participants will have the chance to finalise an interface during the workshop and experience the art of circuit bending. \n\n\nBuy Hacking Electronic Music Toys / Circuit bending workshop with Tasos Stamos\, March 28 \nAll materials and devices provided.\n– Learn the necessary techniques to turn hackable sound toys into useful sound devices and electronic instruments\n– Practical\, hands-on workshop\, including all tips to the most easy and effective modifications\, also presenting musicians who utilize handmade and hacked instruments.\n– Everyone is welcome to bring their own electronic toys for bending\, otherwise hackable toys will be provided from a large selection. Please contact us with any questions regarding “hackability” of your own devices. \n \nTasos Stamou\nAs a music technologist and a professional electronic musician himself\, Stamou has developed a personal style in circuit bending which focuses on the details of the final instrument construction as a physical interface. He has equally developed a personal style in teaching electronics\, based on his personal experience about practicing this technology (ten years) rather than based on intense reading and use of technical terms. Simple in their electronic manipulation\, but precise in their controls and hands-on functions\, Stamou’s music gear is made for playing\, performing and recording\, inspired by previous legendary electronic music designs (synthesizers\, sequencers\, drum machines\, samplers\, video synthesizers\, etc.). He is focused on second hand\, dispatched and recycled resources\, as a sort of technological and artistic activism\, and he is encouraging the participants of his workshops and lectures to do the same. \nTasos Stamou is an instrument maker/modifier/designer and tutor. He has been leading hardware hacking workshops in festivals (Watermans Arts Centre in London\, Green Man Festival U.K\, SOTU Festival Lithuania\, Athens Video Art Festival etc.) and music tech labs (Cafe OTO and Music Hackspace in London\, WORM in Rotterdam\, Macumbista Studio in Berlin\, STPLN in Sweden\, etc.). SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Demo – Signum device with Víctor Mazón Gardoqui
DESCRIPTION:Listen to electromagnetic waves caused by modern devices and natural forces. Hear the patterns of ultraviolet and infrared light; the vibrations of ferric objects; the friction caused by insects and underwater sounds. Listen to the noise of tectonic movements\, or of lighting phenomena thousands of kilometers distant. These are just a few of the hidden sounds that we will listen during the event on monday 11th April\, after the hands on workshop in Cafe OTO on the 9th and 10th April. \nWe will have the chance to see the signum device in action\, exploring how different artists use the device during a practice based event lead by Víctor Mazón Gardoqui and with composer Neil Kaczor as special guest. \n \nThe talk will follow from a workshop at Cafe OTO on 9th and 10th of April. Register to the workshop! \nSIGNUM device is a translator – it uncovers the encrypted codes of information and the language of man/machine communication- which remain unintelligible without technical aid. Sharpening our awareness about what surrounds us\, we will capture radio waves\, FM/AM\, ultrasounds\, translocal network connections\, personal broadcast spaces\, inaudible electromagnetic fields\, photoelectric effects\, etc\, read with a micro controller like an Arduino\, Pic or a raspberry pi. SIGNUM can be used for various applications and in different environments: for the measurement and analysis of different signals through its 8 sensors and inputs\, for field recordings\, music composition or for aesthetic purposes within the sound or visual art praxis\, as it has the unique ability to provide a wide sound palette and hard-to-identify sounds. The device is intended as an experimental tool for educational purposes and artistic practice. \n \nThe Music Hackspace programme is support through public funding by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Build high-performance interactive audio systems – Bela platform workshop
DESCRIPTION:Building high-performance interactive audio systems with the Bela platform \nThis workshop presents Bela\, an embedded platform capable of ultra-low latency audio and sensor processing. Based on the BeagleBone Black\, Bela features stereo audio I/O\, 8 channels each of 16-bit analog I/O and 16 channels of digital I/O. It includes a built-in browser-based IDE including an in-browser oscilloscope. Bela projects can be written in C/C++ or Pure Data\, with beta support for the Faust DSP language. The platform is a great base for building new musical instruments\, interactive audio installations\, synthesisers\, guitar effects pedals\, sound design tools or even kinetic sculptures. \nBela was created in the Augmented Instruments Laboratory\, part of the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary University of London. The platform is open-source hardware and software. In March 2016\, Bela had a highly successful Kickstarter launch\, raising more than 10x its original goal with support from over 500 backers worldwide. \nThis workshop will provide a hands-on introduction to the Bela environment\, working through a series of example projects in C and Pure Data which showcase some of the exciting possibilities Bela makes easy. Each participant will be provided with a kit to use\, including a Bela board\, a breadboard\, sensors and other parts. \nWhat to bring: laptop (any platform); headphones; optional: personal hacking gear (e.g. sensors\, custom circuitry\, sound producing devices). \nPlatform tech specs: Bela features stereo audio in and out (16-bit\, 44.1kHz)\, 8x analog in and out (16-bit\, 22.05kHz; 4 channels can be used at 44.1kHz) and digital in and out (16 channels\, 3.3V). Stereo audio output is capable of driving line\, headphone or 8 ohm speakers (1.1W amplifiers built in). Round-trip latency can be as low as 100 microseconds. Sensors and audio are sampled synchronously to eliminate jitter. The BeagleBone Black on which Bela is based has a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with 512MB of RAM. \nParticipation in the workshop is free. At the end of the workshop\, there will be an opportunity to sign up to join the Kickstarter production run which is currently underway\, with estimated shipping in June or July. \nFor any questions\, please email curators@stagingmhs.local \n \nThe workshop is supported by the Centre for Public Engagement at Queen Mary University of London. \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk - composing music for weather conditions and forest ecosystems\, with Jones/Bulley
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Jones/Bulley create large-scale sound installations that translate patterns and data into ever-changing compositions\, often sited in remote and wild environments. In this talk\, they will discuss composing music for weather conditions and forest ecosystems\, describe some of the technological and compositional challenges encountered through their work\, and explain why they are switching towards using their own ground-up open-source audio software. \nThey will also be giving the first work-in-progress demonstrations of a new work: a sound sculpture that uses a novel notation system to generate tonal music from real-time FM radio broadcasts\, running on a Raspberry Pi. \nJames Bulley (b. 1984) and Daniel Jones (b. 1983) are an artist duo whose collaborative practice explores the boundaries of sound art\, music\, and process-based composition. Their work draws on systems and patterns from the world around us as ways of organising sound\, creating a reciprocal relationship  between the two: using sound as a way to illuminate our understanding of the world\, and using natural processes as a way to deepen our approaches to composition. \nMembers of the New Radiophonic Workshop\, Jones/Bulley’s critically acclaimed work has been shown at venues including the Royal Festival Hall\, the Barbican\, the Museum of Science and Industry\, Aldeburgh Music\, the Old Royal Naval College\, the Queen Elizabeth Hall\, and the Design Museum. Their landscape sound work Living Symphonies toured four UK forests over summer 2014\, supported by Arts Council England\, Sound And Music\, and Forestry Commission England. \nTheir most recent commission\, Vespers\, was installed at the Southbank Centre (London\, UK) from May to September 2015\, co-commissioned by the World Wide Web Foundation. \nhttp://www.jones-bulley.com/ \n \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is support with public funding by Arts Council England.

DESCRIPTION:8th June 19:00 – 21:00 @MachinesRoom\nSuperCollider with Holger Ballweg \n\n\nBuy SuperCollider with Holger Ballweg – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016\nCollaborative live coding in SuperCollider. \nCollaboration in live computer music in general results in interesting performances\, as the styles of the performers merge and/or network effects\, e.g.\, delays in the delivery of network packages\, are exploited. SuperCollider comes with very good support for networking using OSC messages (Open Sound Control – a standard that enables exchanging messages between different computer music applications easily) and additional libraries make it even easier to collaborate. \nWe will explore different levels of collaboration\, specifically: \n– collaborative editing of sound-producing code;\n– sharing code between performers;\n– sharing data between performers\, e.g.\, a musical scale or a common tempo;\n– using and abusing the client-server architecture of SuperCollider to\, e.g.\, play sound on other people’s machines. \nWe will learn how to set them up\, play around with them\, and look at examples of them in use – and look at ways to debug them if things go wrong. \nYou will need your own computer (OSX / Windows/ Linux)\, and a pair of headphones. \n  \nHolger Ballweg is a live coder and programmer living in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). \nAfter studying for an M.A. in Music Informatics at Karlsruhe University of Music (Germany)\, he is now pursuing a PhD at Northumbria University\, Newcastle. \nHe is a member of the live coding laptop band Benoît and the Mandelbrots\, with whom he performed over 70 concerts in Germany and Europe exploring different ways of collaboration using SuperCollider\, which resulted in the development of their own collaborative live coding library\, BenoitLib. In 2012 Benoît and the Mandelbrots received an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica. He is also part of the Birmingham Laptop Ensemble (BiLE) and occasionally plays the laptop or saxophone in a duo with Shelly Knotts. As project assistant of the Network Music Festival in 2013 and 2014 he helped realise diverse networked and collaborative performances\, as well as being a participant in some of them. \n  \nSuperCollider is an incredibly powerful\, open-source\, cross-platform\, audio engine and programming language\, used not only to create music\, but also for machine listening\, audio/music reactive installations\, performance\, interactive systems\, research\, live-coding and much more. \nThis workshop is part of #SoundUnfolded taking place in the Machines Room classroom. \n  \n\n\nBuy SuperCollider with Holger Ballweg – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016\nSupported using public funding by Arts Council England

SUMMARY:Artist Talk - 'Eight Chapters in Four Movements' and 'Astrology of a Friday' by Teresa Cos
DESCRIPTION:Join Teresa Cos for a screening on two recent works combining image and sound emphasising a “collective hypnosis permeating our society”. The mechanical repetition of everyday rituals presented in the first video “Eight Chapters in Four Movements” will be seen in relation to the mesmeric reiteration of socio-political concepts of the second one “Astrology of a Friday”. The result in both cases is a sort of absurd dynamic stagnation. \n \nEIGHT CHAPTERS IN FOUR MOVEMENTS \nLondon Bridge is crossed every morning at the same time by thousands of commuters forming a river moving unidirectionally South to North. The scene is iconic and has been impressed many times in the news\, films\, documentaries\, lullabies and poetry. I observed for some time this phenomenon and calculated with rough mathematics the average pace of the commuters\, which resulted of 113 BPM. I decided to impersonate this rhythm\, walking robotically in the crowd following the beat of a metronome\, but developing four movements that engage and disrupt the linear conception of time embodied by the flow. The movements are intended as four different stages of a ritual and are repeated constantly from 8am to 9am. The performance was documented in first person with an unnoticeable video device fixed to my chest and the entire filmed footage is shown uncut in a life-size video installation. The work is accompanied by a sound piece consisting of the key words of Henri Lefebvre’s ‘Rythmanalysis’\, spoken continuosly for one hour at 113 BPM and it includes fragments of music mixed with ambience sounds\, as well as references to Steve Reich’s ‘Clapping Music’. The recorded action and soundtrack are phased and only synchronise at the video’s start and end. \n  \n2nd movement. Awareness\, walking backwards with the flow. \n  \nEight Chapters in Four movements score \n  \nASTROLOGY OF A FRIDAY \nThe film was shot in the General Assembly Room of the Province of Limburg’s Government Building\, where on the 7th of February 1992 the signing ceremony of the Treaty on European Union (the Maastricht Treaty) took place. Whilst the lights of the eighteen pointed star ceiling perform a choreography that goes in and out of sync with the soundtrack\, we hear a non- European voice reading the hopeful words of the preamble to the Treaty. \nTeresa Cos investigates the human condition\, understood as the endless negotiation between the self and the other and between the individual and society\, seen as one and the same. Her range of approaches\, which include and combine still and moving image\, sound\, performance and scoring\, are informed by her diverse backgrounds in architecture\, documentary photography\, and live music. Teresa’s work has been recently exhibited at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale\, the MOSTYN Gallery in Wales and the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice. She has been attending international residency programs such as the Botin Foundation in Santander with artist Tacita Dean and more recently the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. \n  \nFilm still \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported with public funding by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk – Dancing with music\, graphics and interactive experience with Jan Lee and Tim Murray-Browne
DESCRIPTION:Jan Lee and Tim Murray-Browne are artists who collaborate together to connect the dancing body with music\, graphics and interactive experience. They look at the performed moments in which we create our sense of self\, in relation to the sensorial worlds that we mould and in turn mould us. This includes interactive dance with body-controlled generative visuals\, immersive sound installations and research into sound architectures: how story and place can emerge through bodily sonic interaction with invisible forms. \nThey will talk about recent performance work\, including This Floating World\, an interactive dance show questioning the expressive power of the physical body evolved and amplified by technology. Also Oorgavé Oorgavé\, a poetry/dance performance in an interactive sound space\, telling the story of two travellers discovering the slip between human and animal\, speech and sound. They will talk about research completed in Rio de Janeiro last year in a residency with ZU-UK immersive theatre company researching what are the most basic structures of interactive sound and the question ‘Can we feel a sound pixel in space?’ \nFinally\, they will present a preview of their upcoming project Movement Alphabet\, combining immersive one-on-one audience interaction with body-driven generative visuals to create portraits of how audience members move and express themselves through their body. \n \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

Lydia began studying the theremin at the age of 9 under the direction of  Léon Theremin\, who was first cousin of her grandfather.  Five years later she was ready to give her first  theremin concert\, which marked the beginning of her musical career that has so far led to more than a thousand concerts and theatre\, radio and television performances of classic and contemporary music\, throughout the world. \nThe S&M Accidental Orchestra\nExperimentation and Improvisation with this ‘accidental’ band formed by Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt and joined for this time by London based artists Edmund Davie\, Michael Forrest \, Marina Young and Jude Cowan Montague with the direction of Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt. \nHeidi Heidelberg\nA gutsy electric guitarist and master of the loop pedal she has written music for award-winning films and theatre\, and collaborated with a number of innovative artists. Her current collaborations include ‘Bitch ‘n’ Monk’ – an experimental/jazz duo project with Colombian flautist Mauricio Velasierra\, with whom she has composed and performed live scores for award-winning cinematographers Yuri Pirondi and Ines Von Bonhorst\, showcasing at the V&A Museum and other notable galleries. \nMatawan\nGareth Chapman and Barclay Brennan work addresses the relationship that melody has within texture and how this intrinsically relates to the listener.\nEach piece is an organically layered composition that is comprised from dozens of micro-melodies. Stratified together\, these ordinarily nebulous melodies create dense textures that allude to harmony and musicality in a seemingly abstract way. \n  \nMusica Dispersa is a London based platform which operates internationally and is dedicated to the dissemination and diffusion of experimental music through a wide range of projects in radio broadcast\, cassette releases\, live events and exhibitions. \nFor any questions please email curators@stagingmhs.local \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
