SUMMARY:Livestream: Nestup - A Language for Musical Rhythms
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time: Monday 10th May 6pm UK / 7pm Berlin / 10am LA / 1pm NYC \nIn this livestreamed interview\, we will speak with Sam Tarakajian and Alex Van Gils\, who’ve built a fantastic live-coding environment that works within an Ableton Live device called Nestup.  \nThe programs we use to make music have a lot of implicit decisions baked into them\, especially in their graphical interfaces. Nestup began as a thought experiment\, trying to see if embedding a text editor inside Live could open up new creative possibilities. We think the answer is that yes\, text can work well alongside a piano roll and a traditional musical score\, as a concise and expressive way to define complex rhythms. \nWith Nestup\, you define for yourself any size of rhythmic unit\, any sort of rhythmic subdivision\, and with any scaling factor. These language features open your rhythm programming up to musical ideas such as metric modulation\, nested tuplets\, complex polyrhythm\, and more. Rhythms from musical styles which would have been prohibitively difficult to program in a DAW can therefore be rendered in MIDI\, such as rhythms from Armenian folk musics or “new complexity” compositions. \nOverview of speakers \nSam is a Brooklyn based developer and creative coder. Sam works for Cycling ‘74 and develops independent projects at Cutelab NYC. DESCRIPTION:Thursday 20th May 6pm UK / 7pm Berlin / 10am LA / 1pm NYC \nIn this livestreamed interview\, Alex McLean retraces the history and intent that prompted him to develop TidalCycles alongside ‘Algorave’ live performance events\, contributing to establish Live Coding as an art discipline. \n Alex started TidalCycles project for exploring musical patterns in 2009\, and it is now a healthy free/open-source software project and among the most well-known live coding environments for music. \nTidalCycles represents musical patterns as a function of time\, making them easy to make\, combine and transform. They hosted weekly workshops for students from various disciplines on emerging topics in computer graphics. It was in this group that the first prototype of Shader Park was developed. \nTorin is a freelance creative technologist and adjunct professor at the Parsons School of Design in New York City teaching TouchDesigner and Creative Coding. Based out of NEW INC\, Torin creates immersive installations\, experiences\, interfaces\, and websites. Torin’s work explores emerging techniques in real-time graphics pulling inspiration from systems and patterns of emergent behavior in nature. This work has translated into creating large scale environments for medical professionals to alleviate stress/burnout\, for patients in clinical studies aiding in neuroscience research on brain recovery\, and for commercial spaces bringing sanctuary to the urban landscape. \nPeter is a creative software engineer whose work spans physics\, astronomy\, machine learning\, and computer graphics. He currently works at the NY Times R&D lab focused on emerging computer vision and graphics techniques. Previously\, Pete has worked with CERN to build interactive 3D visualizations used in particle physics. He’s also developed software with the Data Intensive Research in Astrophysics and Cosmology (DIRAC) Institute which enabled the discovery of over 30 new minor planets in the Kuiper belt. Recently his artistic collaborations with Alex Miller of SpaceFiller have been featured in galleries and in a permanent installation in Seattle.

DESCRIPTION:Level: Some experience of norns required \nIn the second Flora workshop\, you will build your own custom L-system algorithms using Flora’s UI and sequence the script using the preset (PSET) sequencer. The script’s community gardening feature will also be covered to give you a new way to share your sequences with a worldwide audience. \nFlora on Vimeo \nBy the end of the second workshop\, you will be able to: \n\n\nDesign custom L-system algorithms with the Flora UI and maiden \n\n\nShare your custom L-system algorithms using Flora’s community gardening feature \n\n\nSequence presets using Flora and other norns scripts \n\n\nUse Flora as a sequencer for your external synthesizer(s) using crow and/or midi \n\n\nSession study topics \n\n\nL-system algorithm properties \n\n\nSharing L-system algorithms \n\n\nMeta-sequencing Flora and other norns scripts \n\n\nNorns integration with midi and/or crow \n\n\n\n \n  \nRequirements \n\n\nA computer and internet connection \n\n\nA norns device with Flora installed \n\n\nOptional: A midi-enabled controller and/or synthesizer \n\n\n  \nWe have a number of sponsorship places available\, if the registration fee is a barrier to you joining the workshop please contact laura@stagingmhs.local. \n  \n  \nAbout the workshop leader \nJonathan Snyder is a Portland\, Oregon based sound explorer and educator. \nPreviously\, he worked for 22 years as a design technologist\, IT manager\, and educator at Columbia University’s Media Center for Art History\, Method\, and Adobe.
