DESCRIPTION:“Set up this low-cost but reliable keyboard as a wireless controller for almost anything with a USB input. This workshop focuses on using it as a MIDI instrument with Mac OS X\, Windows XP/7\, or the Raspberry Pi. SUMMARY:Kazumi interface and DIY kit by Luis Zayas
DESCRIPTION:Makerversity member Luis Zayas brings Kazumi\, an accessible instrument for aspiring musicians and makers designed to remove as many barriers to participation as possible. \nEach of the seven surfaces are touch-pads subdivided into five configurable electrodes. The structure can be rotated on its base to transpose the selected scale. Playing music on Kazumi is a tactile\, sensory experience\, hands exploring and caressing to draw different notes from the speaker embedded in the peak. \nIt has been designed as an open-source DIY kit. This will not only allow anyone to learn about the materials and processes that have gone into the instrument but it will empower users by encouraging them to hack and customise it as the ultimate way of appropriation. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to announce our selected artists to participate in an Embedded Composer in Residence programme at the Music Hackspace\, made in partnership with Sound and Music. \nWe are thrilled to welcome sound artist Leslie Deere into our organisation\, to develop her projects and engage with the Music Hackspace community for the next 6 months as part of the programme. \nSeeking to explore recently emerging performative areas of her practice\, Leslie will aim to combine AV elements as part of a multi faceted performance\, incorporating gesture into digital sound making\, coupled with projected imagery. \nIn the presentation Leslie will introduce her proposed project with more depth; it will be an excellent opportunity for the community to explore engaging with the residency. \n \nLeslie Deere is a London based artist. Originally from Tennessee\, Leslie moved to the UK to study Sonic Art\, continuing on from a performing arts dance scholarship in New York City. She holds a BA Honours degree in Sonic Art under Hugh Davies at Middlesex University and an MA in Communication Art & Design from the Royal College. Commissions include sound installations for Kew Gardens and the SoundUK 2013 tour. Most recently Leslie completed the inaugural year of the KULES residency in Stoke-on-Trent. Situated in a large warehouse space\, Leslie created an 8 Channel installation utilising the natural reverberation present and found cassette tape.

DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to announce our selected artists to participate in an Embedded Composer in Residence programme at the Music Hackspace\, made in partnership with Sound and Music. \nWe are thrilled to welcome sound artist Jack James into our organisation\, to develop his projects and engage with the Music Hackspace community for the next 6 months as part of the programme. \nThrough the residency\, Jack James will collaborate with the Music Hackspace community and the wider public to explore the implicit meaning and unearthed potentials in objects created to serve as consumptive rather than productive devices. \nIn the presentation Jack will introduce his proposed project with more depth; it will be an excellent opportunity for the community to explore engaging with the residency. \n \nJack James is an artist interested in events\, happenings and the role of media in everyday life and culture. Often featuring domestic technologies (re)positioned to explore their relationship with people\, Jack’s work traverses the fields of sound and social practice\, through installation and performance. He is part of artist’s collective thickear with whom he created Ministry of Measurement\, Pink Sheet Method and initiated the Data and Ethics Working Group at ICT & Art Connect 2013\, Brussels. Leading to string of European engagements including Experiment #2 Consent exhibited at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen\, Rotterdam. \nJack’s past appearances include opening SPILL Festival of Performance 2012\, monomania\, BEAM: Brunel Electronic & Analogue Music Festival\, Wysing Arts Centre and Rushgrove House\, London. During his recent residency with Metal in Peterborough Jack received support from Arts Council England to create Temporary Local Broadcast and convene the symposium\, Capturing the “REAL” in response to the ‘subject’.

He has been collaborating with many important artists such a Maurizio Bianchi or Giancarlo Toniutti and since 2001 he is very active with his project Pharmakustik that can be defined as follows: audioclinical investigation; sound-research; implantation and re-implanation of acoustic fragments; intermodulating soundpools related to medical subjects.\nAs Siegmar Fricke is not present on the event he made a special experimental audiovisual film consisting of four unreleased tracks that can be characterised as mind cinema for the listener with new aural conscience. \nHARMERGEDDON:\nNathan + Fae Harmer. Audio/visual/performance art duo.\nTheir work resounds around atmospheric and meditative soundscapes\, forming kinetic pulses\, drifting textures and undulating drones. This is often set to highly manipulated visuals and performance. Their live improvisations focus on the serendipitous working with live electronics\, obsolete consumer electronic devices and the drifting periphery. \nHILDE UND TORBEN DICKMANN:Neubauten-esque duo doing frightening things to your privates. Live/performance wich includes metal sounds and experimental beats. \nIOM:\nThe project of Iker Ormazabal includes Noise\,Drone\,Ambient\,Electric Guitar\,Oscillators\,Field Recordings and Improvisation. \nLUKE JORDAN:\nTek-noise improvisation with pulse / function generators\, modular synth and guitar pedals modulated with hacked flickering light.

SUMMARY:Trumpet augmentation and future musicianship - Joseph Thibodeau
DESCRIPTION:Augmented trumpets are acoustic trumpets on which transducers have been mounted in order to provide extra sonic control variables. At present only a few augmented trumpets are known to be in active use\, yet there is an obvious interest in the subject judging by the regularity of new projects appearing in the literature since the first publication in 1989. \nIn order to fully explore the musical potential of this technology\, it must be adopted by a larger population of performers. The problem is that takes a great deal of technical expertise to create\, maintain\, modify\, and upgrade a sophisticated custom instrument. This is an insurmountable hurdle to those who might otherwise be interested in making music with an augmented trumpet. How can the technical requirements of such projects be reduced to promote widespread experimentation? \nStarting with a review of existing projects\, this presentation demonstrates that while each augmented trumpet must fit to custom artistic needs\, there are commonalities that could be incorporated into a standardized design approach. \nThe proposed solution is to use an open and modular paradigm\, making it easier to build instruments and share design ideas\, and to pursue embedded synthesis\, allowing for standalone instruments with plug-and-play behaviour. \nAudio examples will accompany the presentation\, and an open discussion on new musical instrument design will follow. \nJoseph Thibodeau is a musician and researcher associated with McGill University’s Music Technology area and Concordia University’s Penhune Laboratory for Motor Learning and Neural Plasticity. His work centres mainly around new digital musical instruments\, specifically augmented trumpets\, which he uses in live performance and in studio production. His research is published in Computer Music Journal\, and in 2014 he was commissioned to compose augmented trumpet music for a Radio-Canada documentary\, “Correspondences de Guerre”. \nTogether with fellow researcher Jason Hockman (Birmingham City University)\, Joseph produces music under the alias DAAT and runs the Detuned Transmissions record label. In 2014\, DAAT’s full-length album HVAC received overwhelming support from a variety of international DJs\, airplay on some of the United Kingdom’s largest broadcasting services (e.g.\, BBC\, Rinse FM)\, and accolades from major popular publications such as Mixmag Magazine.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome the team from Befaco for our next DIY modular synth workshop on 18th and 19th April at the Music Hackspace (ContainerVille). \nHands on workshop: build your own synth modules on eurorack format. We provide all the necessary components to build your device from scratch. SUMMARY:Tim Shaw and Sébastien Piquemal - Fields
DESCRIPTION:Fields is an electronic sound piece diffused through the audiences smart phones\, laptops or tablets. \n \nSébastien Piquemal and Tim Shaw explore mobile technology as a medium for sound diffusion. The Fields system enables musicians and composers to explore the potential of smart phones and tablets for sound diffusion. It is a distributed\, open-source\, modular instrument that is fully configurable and extensible. In this seminar Tim and Sébastien will share the process of developing Fields\, composing sound design for tiny speakers and experiences of performing a work of this nature.\nThe piece was originally conceived at this years Music Makers Hacklab at CTM 2014 and has since been performed in Berlin\, Lisbon\, Helsinki\, Paris Athens and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. His practice incorporates diverse approaches to sound collection and processing\, and includes creating immersive and site responsive sonic installations. His compositional methods include field recordings\, synthesized sounds and live electronics\, providing a wide scope for creative diversity. At the heart of his work lies a concern with the auditory reflection and mirroring of real world environments through sound and technology. He is currently studying a PhD in Digital Media at Culture Lab alongside managing Newcastle based record label Triptik. \nSébastien Piquemal \nSébastien Piquemal is a computer engineer\, obsessively exploring the artistic capabilities of machines. After working several years as a full-stack web developer in Helsinki\, Finland\, he decided to dedicate himself fully to making music. Since then\, he has been an active contributor to the open-source software community\, leading various projects such as WebPd (Pure Data patches running in the web browser). As a lover of Jazz and improvised music\, Sébastien is seeking new ways to place human interaction at the core of live music. He is presently doing a MA degree in sound in new media at Media Lab Helsinki. \nThis project is kindly supported by Sound and Music & the Newcastle Institute for Creative Arts Practice.

Are you a circuit bending & hardware hacking enthusiast? \nAre you interested in learning some cool tricks about turning simple electronic sound toys into killer-sound noisy machines?? Then this is a workshop for you! HACK-A-STYLOPHONE WORKSHOP!!” \nWorkshop fee: GBP 45  / GBP 60 including Stylophone. Register via workshops@stagingmhs.local \nCircuit bending workshop  is dedicated to altering and upgrading the functions and sounds of original Stylophones (revived version).
