SUMMARY:DIY Hardware Meetup with Tom Richards
DESCRIPTION:These meetups focus on hardware and DIY electronics for musical applications. They are informal and loosely structured\, and we encourage those with ongoing projects or a backlog of devices to build to come down and work on them\, as well as those with little to no experience to come down to learn and get involved. This is a space to meet like minded people working on diverse electronics projects. We’ve invited Tom Richards to host these meetups and provide technical support and advice. \n \nTom Richards is an artist\, musician\, DJ\, researcher and instrument designer working in London UK. He has walked the line between sonic art\, sculpture and music since graduating with an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art in 2004. Richards has built his own idiosyncratic modular electronic music system\, with which he creates slowly evolving and heavily textured polyrhythmic improvisations. He has performed and exhibited widely in the UK\, as well as internationally in the US\, Germany\, Peru\, Japan and Sweden.\n \nSelected works and live performances have taken place at Tate Britain\, The Queen Elizabeth Hall\, The Science Museum\, Spike Island\, Cafe Oto\, MK Gallery\, Bold Tendencies\, and Camden Arts Centre. \nHe has recently submitted his PhD (Goldsmiths/Science Museum) on the work of Daphne Oram: electronic music pioneer\, and founder member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This research included the re-design and construction of Oram’s Mini Oramics synthesizer\, a project that has since gained worldwide attention. \nThe meetup is organised by Music Hackspace. \nDrinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nImage by Mind The Film. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact info@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Harvester - Build your own DIY sampler with Johann Diedrick
DESCRIPTION:[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”harvester-build-your-own-diy-sampler-with-johann-diedrick” show=”button-only”] \nHarvester is a hand-held\, portable live sampler that lets you make music with everyday sounds. With the instrument\, you are able to capture sounds around you (your voice\, another musical instrument\, environmental noises etc.). The instrument provides an interface that lets you play back the sampled sound based around a musical\, pentatonic scale. This allows for a wildly expressive sonic palette that can be used for musical performance and sound art installations. \nOver the course of this two-day workshop\, we will build the hardware and software for this instrument. This workshop is designed for beginners in both\, allowing you to leave with your own hand-built instrument. \nOn the the first day we will assemble the hardware\, including some soldering. We will use the Raspberry Pi hardware to create our own hardware interface for our instrument. \nOn the second day\, we will look at the software and program our own modifications. We will take a look at the software that runs the Raspberry Pi\, including the Linux operating system. We will look at the Python programming language for OSC communication\, and Pure Data for sound synthesis. We will then look at using Pure Data for sound sampling and musical playback. At the end of the day we will take our instruments outside into the city and play music with the sounds in the environment. \nThe workshop costs £110 and includes all the parts that you will need to assemble the instrument. All tools will be supplied. Participants will need to bring their own laptops for the second day. It should have Wifi or an Ethernet card with your own Ethernet cable. \nFollowing the workshop\, Johann will present a free Artist Talk on June 25th. \nJohann Diedrick makes installations\, performances\, and objects that let people play with sound. He shares his work through workshops\, listening tours\, and open-source software and hardware. He received the Asian Cultural Council 2016 Fellows grant and has been featured in Wire Magazine and Musicworks Magazine. He has exhibited internationally in numerous group exhibitions\, conferences and festivals\, including the Soundscapes symposium at Yale University\, the NIME conference in Daejeon and Seoul\, Korea\, and the Invisible Places conference in Viseu\, Portugal. He studied at the ITP program at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU focusing on sound art. He was a researcher at the InterLab at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) in Yamaguchi\, Japan and worked as an interactive software developer at Qosmo in Tokyo\, Japan. He is currently a senior developer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. \nIf you have any questions about this event or any of our workshops please contact workshops@stagingmhs.local. \nWe can offer a student discount of 10% off this workshop. Please email us for a discount code. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nIllustration by Seo Hye Lee

SUMMARY:Internal Motivations workshop with Sheryl Cheung
DESCRIPTION:Internal motivations is a workshop for new imaginations of internal martial arts through the perspective of sound. In this exercise we will explore different Taoist concepts in relation to sound and energy. Internal martial arts is a seemingly passive but internally vigorous form of martial arts that stresses on breathing\, energy circulation\, external and internal movements\, and expanded consciousness. How may the soundscape of this mind and body tradition be re-interpreted in today’s context? \n \nActivities: \n1 Listening session of film soundtracks \n2 Study of ancient martial art scores \n3 Recording your own body movements & simple collective folly techniques \n4 Creating soundscapes (can be finished later and submitted by the end of July) \nProvided materials: \n1 Excerpts of film soundtracks and martial arts documentaries \n2 Ancient scriptures that illustrate internal body movement \n3 Recordings of internal body sounds and natural forces \n4 Examples of new martial arts exercises and sounds \nIt’s recommended that participants bring a laptop. Prior experience working with music is not required.   \nWith the participant’s consent\, completed soundtracks will be compiled into a collective album and published on lololol.net\, an online platform for mind and body exercises\, which will presented in this year’s Bangkok Biennial in August. \nSheryl Cheung works with sound\, installation and performance to explore a material concept of life. Perceiving life as a force\, a mobility that drives our innate persistence to live\, Sheryl is especially interested in the potential of vulnerable\, ambiguous\, and internal efforts that lead us to deeper awareness of the nature of being. \nThrough ongoing explorations of soundscape\, energy fields\, and research into ancient and contemporary discourses on natural life\, Sheryl pursues projects that explore the space of sound as cosmological readings of today’s increasingly post-wilderness world. \nSheryl Cheung was raised in Taipei\, New York\, and Beijing. Her work has been shown at the Taipei Fine Art Museum\, Taipei Contemporary Art Center\, Lacking Sound Festival; Chronus Art Center\, Shanghai; JOLT Arts Festival\, and Jeju Art Museum\, Korea. \nThis workshop is curated by Lucia H Chung (Happened) as part of her residency with Music Hackspace\, which aims to promote and give visibility to artists from Taiwan working with sound. Throughout July\, August and September\, four Taiwanese artists chosen by Lucia will be taking up short term residencies at Music Hackspace and delivering workshops\, artist talks and performances. Lucia’s residency will culminate with a final night of performances in late September. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Performance: Yen Tzu Chang
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nTaiwanese artist Yen Tzu Chang presents an artist talk followed by her Whose Scalpel performance. \nWhose Scalpel is a sound performance combined with visuals and a 3D printed installation\, realised with a framework for medical image processing. Mixing several methods from art and science\, it is an imagination of the future and presents issues of the relationship between humans and machines through simulated heart surgery. The concept is developed out the application of sound in medical science\, coronary artery bypass surgery and machine learning. The background story of the performance is based on the assumption that in the near future a surgeon works with the machine which can give advice during surgery. The installation is built according to the performer’s real heart from MRI scans and is enlarged from its actual size. It is designed to interact when the performer plugs in audio cables and bridges connections\, much like the method of coronary artery bypass surgery. During the performance\, the storyline is lead by the sound and video of medical images and live performance from the webcam. The video and the sound also present the machine which gives instruction to the performer as a physician. The patient (the heart) who is operated on symbolises human’s conscience and faith. The performance asks a question relating to the issue of the machine and human: “If machines can reason even better than human\, will we as humans lose some abilities and even not believe ourselves anymore?” \n \nThe project was developed during the residency STEAM Imaging designed by Fraunhofer MEVIS and hosted together with Ars Electronica within the European Digital Art and Science Network. \nYen Tzu Chang (b. 1991\, TW) is a Taiwanese media artist who lives and studies in Linz\, Austria. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the new media art department of the Taipei National University of Art. Since 2014\, she has been studying for her master’s degree at the Interface Culture department of the Kunstuniversität Linz. Until now\, she has given performances and exhibited her works in many international conferences and festivals\, such as Ars Electronica Festival\, roBOt 08 Festival\, Linux Audio Conference\, ISEA\, Digital Design Weekend in London and etc. She had a touring performance with Renick Bell and Calum Gunn in Japan in 2016. Recently\, she is participating an interdisciplinary project organized by Ars Electronica and Fraunhofer MEVIS\, which including an art residency program and cooperating with the scientist – Sabrina Haase to bring the STEAM workshops for German and Austrian pupils. The residency artistic outcome has been presented at the Ars Electronica Festival 2017. \nThis event is curated by Lucia H Chung (Happened) as part of her residency with Music Hackspace\, which aims to promote and give visibility to artists from Taiwan working with sound. SUMMARY:Hacking Buddhist Chanting Machines with Lu Yi
DESCRIPTION:In the first part of this workshop\, Lu Yi will introduce Buddhist chanting machines. These are small sound players sold throughout Taiwan\, China and Japan that play Buddhist chants on repetitive loops and are often used at religious ceremonies and on special dates. Lu Yi will talk about how people use these machines in both normal and abnormal ways by introducing some artist videos which demonstrate the potential of repurposing these objects. \n \nSecond\, will be hacking chanting machines by accessing their small circuit boards inside and finding their clock resistors. This can be done by exploring the circuit board with a wet finger. By touching the resistor with your wet finger you can also change the pitch of the machine. Participants will then be replacing the clock resistors with variable resistors to give more control over the chanting machine’s sound. Finally\, at the end of the workshop all participants will be invited to join in a live improvisational jam session. \nAll tools and materials will be provided by Lu Yi and Music Hackspace. \nLu Yi is a sound artist and a member of Soundwatch Studio. She obtained a master’s degree in Applied Arts from National Chiao Tung University\, Taiwan. She did further study in San Francisco at the Academy of Art University and the San Francisco Art Institute. She began working in the sound art sphere in 2011 when she founded Soundwatch Studio with Fujui Wang\, a pioneer of sound art in Taiwan. The two have performed live together at events and festivals including “Shoot The Pianist” (Birkbeck School of Arts\, University of London)\, “On Site” (Taipei Artist Village)\, “B!as 2015: Taiwan-Belgium Sound Art Exchange Project / City Sonic 2015” (Mons\, Belgium)\, Digital Art Festival 2015 “Digitopia” (Songshan Tobacco Factory\, Taipei)\, “Ting Shuo Has Performance” (Ting Shuo Studio\,Tainan)\, “Craked Sonic” (The Wall\,Taipei) and Lacking Sound Festival “Listen 100” (The Wall\,Taipei). \nThis workshop is curated by Lucia H Chung (Happened) as part of her residency with Music Hackspace\, which aims to promote and give visibility to artists from Taiwan working with sound. SUMMARY:Taiwanese Experimental Music with Wang Fujui\, Lu Yi\, Meuko! Meuko!\, Tzu Ni and LTY
DESCRIPTION:Taking place in the crypt below Somerset House’s courtyard featuring music visuals by Wang Fujui\, Lu Yi\, Meuko! Meuko!\, TZU NI & LTY. The evening will be full of analog and electronic noise\, visuals and unique sonic experimentation from Taiwan based artists. \nThis final event of Lucia H Chung’s (Happened) three month curatorial residency with Music Hackspace is a showcase promoting and giving visibility to artists from Taiwan working with sound. The night\, taking place in the crypt below Somerset House’s courtyard\, will feature music and visuals by Wang Fujui\, Lu Yi\, Meuko! Meuko!\, TZU NI and LTY. The evening will be full of analog and electronic noise\, visuals and unique sonic experimentation emerged and cultivated in a small island country in East Asia. \nThis event marks the end of a 3 month residency with Music Hackspace as part of their Somerset House Studios residency and is presented in collaboration with Lacking Sound Festival based in Taipei\, with support from National Culture and Art Foundation Taiwan and from Arts Council England. \n  \nPlease note this is an 18+ event. \n \n  \nWang Fujui + Lu Yi\nAs one of the pioneers of sound art in Taiwan\, Wang Fujui founded NOISE\, Taiwan’s first independent record label and zine focusing on experimental sound in 1993. In 2000\, Wang joined ETAT Lab\, and initiated BIAS Sound Art Exhibition and Sound Art Prize in the Digital Art Awards Taipei. Over the last decade\, while continuing his practice in sound and digital art creation\, he has also been leading the new generation of young digital artists in Taiwan through his public programmes. Since 2008\, Wang has been curating the annual Digital Art Festival Taipei and TranSonic Sound Art Festival. Meuko!\nMeuko! Meuko! has been an ongoing project for the producer and singer since 2007. Collaborated with Goodbye Nao member performing live experimental sound performances. Started performing solo in 2015. Each performance contains improvisation and elements of new works\, collecting from various different objects and of strange sounds and noises. Components of local experimental beats and a wide gamut of electronic music draw from Taiwan’s irregular view / architectures and buildings\, muggy\, emissions-filled air\, and hectic streetscapes\, while Mandarin Chinese and Japanese influences marry intricate beats and whispering lyrics. All these tiny elements serve as pondering-points on the darkness that underpins the most intense emotions of the city’s aggregations. Meuko! Meuko! hosts a monthly NTS show from Taipei. \nTZU NI\nSpace and sound\, sound and body\, body and machine\, machine and ritual\, ritual and poetry\, poetry and space. In a social landscape filled to the brim with busy work\, Hung Tzu-Ni seeks to create a setting or an environment where a listener or viewer might enter into a dream state\, momentarily isolated from the outer world\, and in that space be able to more intensely perceive one’s frame of mind & body. \nLTY\nLAI\, Tsung-Yun\, curator of Lacking Sound Festival\, presenting a sampling of audiovisual interactive praxis\, piecing together largely formless images and field recordings of eccentricity and frenzy. Chaining altogether mixed noises and oversampling test tones\, his sound experiment provides listener a profound dip into the enigmatic soundscape. \n失聲祭 Lacking Sound Festival\nLacking Sound Festival is one of the most prestigious events for experimental sound artists in Taiwan. It was founded by a group of sound artists who saw the lack of platform and community for this creative medium\, and started a monthly event for performances. It has been running continuously in Taiwan for the past eight years. Lacking Sound Festival does not only introduce international new talents\, but also dedicates themselves to documenting and producing theory writing on the Taiwanese sound art scene. \nThis event is supported by the National Culture and Arts Foundation in Taiwan.

SUMMARY:October TidalCycles Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Our TidalCycles meetups are a series of informal\, participatory meetups focusing on Alex Mclean’s open source\, accessible livecoding platform. They’re very loosely structured\, with occasional short talks and performances. \nNo programming experience is necessary for these meetups. They are open to all abilities and are an excellent opportunity to learn how to start making music with code. We encourage you to bring a laptop and headphones to make the most of the meetup. There’s no need to have come to the previous meetups to come to this one. \nTidalCycles is a programming language for live coding pattern. It allows you to make musical patterns with text\, describing sequences and ways of transforming and combining them\, exploring complex interactions between simple parts. \nTidal is open source and can be downloaded for free here. If you have any problems with installation we’d be happy to help out in the meetup. If you’re keen to develop your Tidal knowledge beforehand\, there are plenty of great resources available. See our document of resources for independent learning here. \n  \n \n  \nThe meetup is organised by Music Hackspace. \nDrinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. SUMMARY:Electronic Music from Field Recordings workshop with NSDOS – Part of ASSEMBLY
DESCRIPTION:  \nAs part of our final residency in 2018 we’re collaborating with Somerset House Studios in a jointly produced workshop presenting French artist NSDOS in November\, also part of the Studios’ new experimental music programme– ASSEMBLY. Paris based NSDOS –aka Kirikoo Des– is a hybrid artist who works simultaneously on music\, dance\, digital art\, and builds his own instruments. \nDuring the workshop participants will create sounds and music through data generated by video-tracking and field recordings\, focusing on how musicians capture\, manipulate and perform data. Alongside the workshop\, on Saturday 17th November NSDOS will perform live as part of ASSEMBLY. \n  \n\n  \nOver the weekend (11am-5pm Saturday and 11am-6pm Sunday)\, participants are invited to make musical patches from field recordings capturing sounds and datasets off-location on Saturday\, followed by Sunday’s programming and composition sessions at Somerset House Studios. The workshop is targeted at entry level audiences with interests in music\, dance and digital\, who are interested to discover new digital audio workstations. \nParticipants will need to bring their own laptops. Free one month licenses of Usine Hollyhock (NSDOS’ DAW of choice) will be provided. Tutorials and introductions to this particular software will take place during the weekend. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. For any questions please email workshops@stagingmhs.local \n  \nNSDOS\nParis-based NSDOS – aka Kirikoo Des – is a hybrid artist who works simultaneously on music\, dance\, digital art\, and builds his own instruments. After studying dance\, Des felt the need to create his own sound in order to explore movement. Unrestrained by existing technological tools and softwares\, he prefers creating his own mediums: futurist instruments made of old audio converters (carte son)\, Gameboy emulators\, pieces of metal dismantled and weld together giving form to surreal machines. Surrounded by his hybrid tools\, NSDOS unravels the rectilinear anatomy of techno music. Textures are exploded\, sounds mutilated\, and brought back to their essence. \nASSEMBLY\nA celebration of contemporary electronic and experimental music and the makers behind it\, curated by Somerset House Studios. Putting artistic process and community at the forefront\, this packed weekend series will feature newly commissioned performances\, installations and discussion from the Studios’ artists and the best international talent. Artists include Gazelle Twin\, Jennifer Walshe\, Paul Purgas\, Vessel\, Lucy Railton and more. Discover the full programme here. \n

SUMMARY:Music Hackspace & Individual Collective pres. An evening with Downwards Records
DESCRIPTION:Somerset House Studios residents Music Hackspace have joined forces with London event curators Individual Collective; to present a panel celebrating the 25th anniversary of the eponymous electronic music label: Downwards. \n \nBorn in 1993\, Downwards was launched from the gritty industrial heartland of Birmingham. In doing so\, founder Karl O’Connor AKA Regis\, crystallised a definitive direction beyond the confines of the 90’s electronic music scene and the definition of ‘Techno’. \nDownwards’ longevity has continued to buck the trend of many independent Labels in Electronic music: refusing to be constrained by genre; not only weathering the death and rebirth of vinyl\, but in learning how to publish a book and consistently releasing fresh creative content with clever juxtaposition of musicianship. Artists such as Justin Broadrick and Mick Harris (Napalm Death) sit alongside newcomers such as  Samuel Kerridge\, DVA Damas and Ora Iso. If that wasn’t enough; Downwards collaborations continue to inject layered depth and renewed energy to the club scene: the recent rebirth of British Murder Boys (Regis & Surgeon)\, Ugandan Methods (Regis & Ancient Methods) and the much anticipated reimagined CUB (Regis & Simon Shreeve) premiering in December. \nThe panel will be hosted by The Quietus’ Luke Turner who will be joined in conversation by legendary electronic producer Andrea Parker\, Karl O’Connor himself and long time Downwards artist and NTS Radio broadcaster Samuel Kerridge. It will be a unique opportunity to hear their personal perspectives and to follow the evolution of the label. In this intimate setting\, the audience will also have the chance to interact with the panel and ask questions. \nFollowing this event Individual Collective will host the last night of the Downwards 25 year tour at Corsica Studios on 1st December where they will host the world premiere of the first ever CUB live show. \nWith this panel Music Hackspace starts a series of discussion events looking into precarious practices in electronic music\, DIY publishing and London based collectives promoting experimental and electronic music. \nDoors for the event will open and 18:30 and the panel will begin at 19:00. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact info@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Ritual Laboratory; a technology to transform consciousness
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nRitual Laboratory – Labours of Herakleos\n\nJoin us for a series of participatory rituals\, based on the 12 mythic Labours of Herakleos. Forming part of an ongoing research and development project\, considering the relationship between sound and movement performance\, and altered states of consciousness.  \n \nThe embodiment of each myth functions as an interface\, to construct the components of ritual form\, and to explore the subjective impact of trance inducing use of sound\, movement\, light\, scent\, and symbolic narrative. \nEach Labour of Herakleos as narrative score\, catalyses a dialogue between musicians and performers\, facilitating an immersive experience of the myth. These 12 Labours share significant parallels with the astronomical movement of the Sun\, projected through the symbolism of the zodiacal constellations in a calendar year. Harnessing the cyclical changes in our natural environment as a basis for structure and objectivity\, we aim to fall into rhythm with the cycles of the natural world.  \nEach session of the laboratory focuses on balancing a sequential zodiacal energy. We begin with Aries – The Head (Thoughts)\, and work down to Pisces – The Feet (Deeds)\, utilising a variety of techniques that function as rites of passage.\n \nThrough symbolic performance of the corresponding myth\, we create a platform to interact through creative practice and performance within ritual form. An opportunity to communally develop method and infrastructure\, for celebrating culture and sharing ideas through performance of the arts.\n \nThrough imposition of physical communal activity\, we challenge the dissociative side-effects of increasingly disembodied tools\, and consider the impacts of interface design on social interaction within our culture and creative practices. \n\nFurther\, we critically analyse the role that interface and has to play in inducing and facilitating altered states\, as well as in presenting the context for creation and shared performance.\n\n………………………………………………………..  \nAn experimental laboratory of 12 events. No prior knowledge required. Everyone welcome!  \nWe will begin each session  by sharing  a discussion regarding the symbolism of the myth\, and how the Labour will play out. Secondly we explore features of trance induction\, hypnotic phenomena and their role in creative practice. Lastly we will perform the myth together\, and share feedback afterwards.  \nInstrumentation will vary as we explore the intersection of traditional trance instruments and contemporary production tools.

This month we continue with Taurus (Desire)\, utilising a variety of techniques that function as rites of passage. \nThe embodiment of each myth functions as an interface\, to construct the components of ritual form\, and to explore the subjective impact of trance inducing use of sound\, movement\, light\, scent\, and embodied narrative. \n \nPlease email curators@stagingmhs.local for any questions. \n…………………………………………………… \nAn experimental laboratory of 12 events.
