SUMMARY:'Don’t Press Record\, Press Perform' with Tim Exile
DESCRIPTION:Musician and technologist Tim Exile is kicking off his new live performance project with a tour of intimate UK venues where he’ll showcase his new self-made instrument and announce exciting news about the project. \n \nPerformance is almost always a footnote to composition in the electronic music world and Tim has been working for the last 15 years to turn this on its head by creating his own bespoke instruments for electronic performance. The latest milestone in his quest to combine the fluidity and spontaneity of traditional acoustic instruments with the infinite sound worlds of synthesis and sampling is an instrument deep enough to write and perform an entire album. Join him to experience the first results and hear him share his journey with the project. \nTim’s had an impressive career. As a musician he’s released critically acclaimed albums on seminal electronic record labels Planet Mu and Warp and performed live in every continent. With his technologist hat on he’s released 3 plugin instrument and FX in collaboration with music tech giants Native Instruments. For the last 5 years Tim has been focussed on developing his Flow Machine instrument which forms the centre of his visceral 100% improvised live performances. \nJoin Tim at one of these dates and watch out for a special announcement nearer the time with some exciting news about the instrument\, the project and its future. \nRead more about Tim’s ideas in this Medium article here! \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Musica Dispersa at Music Hackspace #03
DESCRIPTION:Musica Dispersa return to Music Hackspace\, this time in Limewharf\, with experimentation and improvisation as the common denominators\, bringing a line up of sound artists and experimental musicians. \n  \nTime and date: Thursday 14th July\, 7pm-10pm  \nLocation: Limewharf\, LimeWharf Yard\, Vyner Street\, London\, E2 9DJ \nPrice: £5 (cash on door). Please RSVP attendance here. The bar will be closed during the event\, you are welcome to byob.  \n  \nLydia Kavina\nBorn in Moscow and currently living in Oxfordshire\, UK\, Lydia Kavina is one of the leading performing musicians on the theremin. Lydia began studying the theremin at the age of 9 under the direction of  Léon Theremin\, who was first cousin of her grandfather.  Five years later she was ready to give her first  theremin concert\, which marked the beginning of her musical career that has so far led to more than a thousand concerts and theatre\, radio and television performances of classic and contemporary music\, throughout the world. \nThe S&M Accidental Orchestra\nExperimentation and Improvisation with this ‘accidental’ band formed by Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt and joined for this time by London based artists Edmund Davie\, Michael Forrest \, Marina Young and Jude Cowan Montague with the direction of Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt. \nHeidi Heidelberg\nA gutsy electric guitarist and master of the loop pedal she has written music for award-winning films and theatre\, and collaborated with a number of innovative artists. Her current collaborations include ‘Bitch ‘n’ Monk’ – an experimental/jazz duo project with Colombian flautist Mauricio Velasierra\, with whom she has composed and performed live scores for award-winning cinematographers Yuri Pirondi and Ines Von Bonhorst\, showcasing at the V&A Museum and other notable galleries. \nMatawan\nGareth Chapman and Barclay Brennan work addresses the relationship that melody has within texture and how this intrinsically relates to the listener.\nEach piece is an organically layered composition that is comprised from dozens of micro-melodies. Stratified together\, these ordinarily nebulous melodies create dense textures that allude to harmony and musicality in a seemingly abstract way. \n  \nMusica Dispersa is a London based platform which operates internationally and is dedicated to the dissemination and diffusion of experimental music through a wide range of projects in radio broadcast\, cassette releases\, live events and exhibitions. \nFor any questions please email curators@stagingmhs.local \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

Please note this £20 booking fee won’t be refunded in case of you cancelling / not showing. \nThanks for the reservation and see you soon! We will be in touch with you to confirm registration and provide further details. \nMore information: \nDuring the last past years\, the radio world has witnessed the rise of numerous initiatives related to the hybridization of traditional radio means with digital standards and systems\, nourishing and renewing the classic radio-amateur practises and approaches such as pirate satellite brazilian radios http://www.wired.com/2009/04/fleetcom/?currentPage=all \nBut even if technical protocols such as Software Defined Radio (SDR)\, streaming and p2p decentralized practices have opened new perspectives\, it is mostly the recent new political approaches of radio\, such as Kogawa’s MicroFM [A Micro Radio Manifesto http://anarchy.translocal.jp/radio/micro/o] or the Telecomix Internet radio initiative [http://telecomix.org/] that have unveiled new exciting territories. \nNowadays\, radio is -in its digital transformation\, far from the unidirectional relationship with the listener of the FM band. It is open to very local broadcast and wild transmissions over large spectrum\, carrying both sounds and data\, and offering to rethink its architecture on the principles of rhizomatic and meshed networks. \nFollowing the Π-Node experiments [https://www.p-node.org]\, this workshop proposes to explore the use of RTL-SDR antennas: \n\nprimary conceived for TNT television reception [dongle based on the RTL2832U chipset http://www.rtl-sdr.com/about-rtl-sdr/]\nsubverted to the reception of various signals from the radio spectrum from 20MHz to 2000MHz.\n\nThe antenna will be receiving waves of data messages\, encoded through Minimodem [http://www.whence.com/minimodem/] \nA Raspberry Pi will be transformed in a radio transmitter\, using the GPIO 4 and the PiFM software [PiFM: http://icrobotics.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Turning_the_Raspberry_Pi_Into_an_FM_Transmitter] \nParticipants willl use and connect those tools and techniques\, in order to create a chain of radio data relays\, and trying ultimately to subvert it by various means (radio interferences\, sound transformation\, data capture and text substitution\, etc…). \nPrevious knowledge \nParticipants shall have a basic knowledge of command line programming and a wide curiosity for radio phenomenons. \nLanguages used will be python\, but can also be programmed in other various langages (ruby\, java\, c++\, etc …) \nThis workshop will be led by RYBN.ORG \nRYBN.ORG is an extra-disciplinary artistic research platform\, funded in 2000 as a web entity\, disseminated into several servers all over the internet and physically present in Paris. RYBN.ORG operates through interactive & networked installations\, digital/analog visual cross-performances and pervasive computing. Their projects refer as well to the codified systems of the artistic representation (aesthetic\, painting\, architecture\, avant-garde\, music) as to the socio-politic and physical phenomenons\, exploring various fields such as economics\, data mass analysis\, perverted artificial intelligence\, disrupting auto-learning\, language and syntaxes\, sensory perception and cognitive systems.  \nhttp://www.rybn.org \nThis workshop is part of #SoundUnfolded #ACE funded. \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:On the hybridisation of digital communication networks and analog radio protocols – Artist Talk with RYBN/.ORG
DESCRIPTION:This talk aims to introduce a few chosen actual digital radio infrastructures\, networks and initiatives in the perspective of artistic practices. Starting with the very beginning of the amateur radio movements that have emerged with the radio itself\, the talk will also cross roads with the birth of offshore pirate radios\, the movement of radio libres and their connection with the minitel in Paris and Bologna\, Max Neuhaus\, John Cage and the experimental uses of radio in sound arts\, optical network of data transmission in Czech Republic\, the Frei Funk movement in Germany\, micronations and data heavens. The talk will end with a presentation of various actual approaches of radio\, from the realms of miniFM to the communication networks of high-frequency trading. \nRYBN/.ORG is an extra-disciplinary artistic research platform\, funded in 2000 as a web entity\, disseminated into several servers all over the internet and physically present in Paris. SUMMARY:Embedded residencies event: This Is Not A Composition
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday 16th September\, doors open 18.30\nVenue: Cafe Oto – Project Space\, located just around the corner from Cafe OTO at 1-7 Ashwin Street – E8 3DL\nProduced by: Sound and Music in partnership with Music Hackspace \nTickets: The event is free but registration is essential >> Book here\nLeslie Deere and Jack James\, our Sound and Music Embedded composers-in-residence will present a showcase of their work developed during their 16 month residencies in a one-off event at Cafe Oto project space. \nTaking inspiration from their time at Music Hackspace\, both composers will present a snapshot of their diverse work exploring conceptual representations of musical composition\, the audio-visual experience of music making and the aesthetics of audio-visual technology. \nThe evening will be introduced by former Music Hackspace Embedded Composer in Residence Tim Murray-Browne (Cave of Sounds). \n  \n \nInstructions to The Oval Car Park \nDrawing from a period of social research into the locality surrounding Music Hackspace’s home in Containerville during 2015\, Jack James presents his text-based-score Instructions to The Oval Car Park. \nThrough a performance lecture Jack will explore his use of compositional narrative to document ad hoc social conventions used to navigate The Oval in Bethnal Green\, London as an informal car park. \nWhen parking on The Oval\, drivers park each other in and leave their mobile phone number on the car dashboard. Upon receiving calls\, drivers leave nearby workplaces to let each other out\, with cars moving and re parking periodically each day. \n  \n \n  \nModern Conjuring for Amateurs \nTaking its title from the eponymous book by J.C. Cannell\, a popular guide to learning tricks\, conjuring and ventriloquism\, Deere’s performance will combine her performing arts dance background with her sonic arts training\, as she creates a shared experience\, conjuring up sound and visuals with gesture. \nShe will control sound and image through gesture\, by way of Kinect camera and bespoke software. Drones\, chimes\, noise\, field recordings\, found audio\, sounds from CERN and the Quantizer Sonification Project combine to create a lilting minimal evocative work. \nLeslie Deere (photo by Marie Volognes) \n  \nEvent details \nVenue: Cafe Oto Project Space // 1-7 Ashwin Street – E8 3DL \nTime: Doors @ 6.30pm // Event @ 7 – 9pm \nTickets: The event is free but registration is essential >> Book here\n  \nAbout the composers \nAbout Leslie Deere \nLeslie Deere is a London based artist. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for artists and researchers wanting to become more familiar with the potential of sound. Our focus will be on expanding our understanding of sound in an environment. This requires a basic vocabulary for talking about sound as a material\, as well as the ability to make and use tools for investigating and manipulating sound for creative purposes. \nOur frame of reference will be Good Vibrations\, a mobile listening kit that allows “acoustic explorers” to find abandoned sounds in their environment. By using hand-made microphones and amplifiers\, listeners can tune into the subtle vibrations that usually go unnoticed. The project encourages listeners to reimagine their sonic environment by playfully exploring the world through their ears. \nThe workshop will introduce participants to the world of sound art\, while providing techniques for making tools for creating these experiences. This will include the fabrication of hand-made microphones and amplifiers for use in installations\, performances\, and scientific research. The goal of the workshop is to take these tools into the field and use them for artistic investigation and public engagement. \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”naked-ear-exploring-recording-and-listening-workshop-with-johann-diedrick” show=”all”] \nWith this item you will be booking a spot in the workshop. All materials included! \nPlease note this £50 booking fee won’t be refunded in case of you cancelling / not showing. Thanks for the reservation and see you soon! We will be in touch with you to confirm registration and provide further details. For any questions please email curators@stagingmhs.local. \n  \nJohann Diedrick makes installations\, performances\, and software that allow people to play with sound. \nHis work has been exhibited internationally in numerous group exhibitions\, conferences and festivals\, including the New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) conference in Daejeon and Seoul\, Korea\, the Invisible Places\, Sounding Cities conference in Viseu\, Portugal\, and the Dumbo Arts Festival in Brooklyn\, New York. \nHe received his Masters in Professional Studies at the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University\, focusing on sound art. During time at ITP he was a researcher at the InterLab at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) in Yamaguchi\, Japan. Afterwards he worked as an interactive software developer at Qosmo in Tokyo\, Japan. He is currently a software developer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Sounds Like You – Artists Talk with Johann Diedrick
DESCRIPTION:In his talk Sounds Like You Johann Diedrick will present some of his past work and delve deep into his Good Vibrations project: the project’s inspirations\, works that have influenced the project’s developments\, and some of the insights he has had along the way. \nGood Vibrations is a mobile listening device that allows users to tap into of the least audible sounds of a city. With the use of three different types of microphone: a contact mic\, a hydrophone and a probe mic\, the user can tune in to subtle acoustic vibrations in the environment and explore the city’s cracks and surfaces. A field guide for urban listening directs users to acoustic ‘points of interest.’ \nThe talk will take place between 7pm and 8pm\, the remaining time will be used for networking\, casual hangout and drinks until close at 10pm. You are welcome to byob. \n \nAfterwards he will present some new projects he is working on. \n– Website: www.johanndiedrick.com\n– Instagram: www.instagram.com/johanndiedrick/\n– Twitter: twitter.com/jdiedrick \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

E2 9DJ\nProduced by: Sound and Music in partnership with Music Hackspace and Signal Noise \nTickets: Register for free \nIn November\, Music Hackspace will be hosting Creative Data Club right to the heart of LimeWharf’s cultural innovation hub in East London. \nData Gazing #2: Sound and Music is teaming up with celebrated information design agency Signal Noise for Creative Data Club Data Gazing Trilogy – a series of special future-focused data events. The event will feature a blend of creative speakers to brand new venues across the capital\, alongside a special event in Manchester\, as part of the Data Gazing Trilogy beginning this autumn. \nAs artists\, scientists\, designers and entrepreneurs\, we often find that\, even through the smallest of explorations\, there is a mass of data sitting at the very edge of our fingertips\, waiting to be used. But how do we use it? Are we open with it? Do we seek to share it with others? And if so\, what does that process of sharing involve? How do we translate and retransmit the data that we have been tracking? \nSpeakers Tim Exile\, Olivia Rzepczynski (what3words) and Alexis Kirke will be joining us to explore a breath of innovative and experimental uses of data sets; from generating sound and multimedia performance to providing an insight into better addressing the complex world in which we live today. \n#creativedata @MusicHackspace #SignalNoiseLDN \nThis is a free event\, so join us on a creative expedition of data interpretation today!  Audiences will be admitted on a first come\, first served basis. \n\nAbout Creative Data Club\nCreative Data Club is a platform for artists\, scientists\, agencies\, designers\, marketers\, programmers and even the odd data cynic to listen\, debate and be inspired by data and creativity. We bring together a handful of speakers from different backgrounds to share their thoughts and experiences\, exploring the expanding world of data with the likes of Sam Aaron\, creator of Sonic Pi\, Sandy Black from the London School of Fashion and Jay Short from design agency Inition. \nAbout Sound and Music\nSound and Music is the national charity for new music in the UK. Their mission is to maximise the opportunities for people to create and enjoy new music. Their work includes composer and artist development\, partnerships with a range of organisations\, audience development\, touring\, information and advice\, network building\, and education. Join the network: @Soundandmusic // /soundandmusic \nIn partnership with: \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith special thanks to:

SUMMARY:Workshop – Sines Brain Wave and Sound Art Hackathon with AXNS
DESCRIPTION:On 18 – 19th March AXNS Collective\, in partnership with Imperial College London and Music Hackspace\, will be giving teams of sound artists\, neuroscientists and data analysts exclusive access to brain wave data from groundbreaking LSD research. \nThe two day hackathon event will bring together sound artists to work alongside neuroscientists and data analysts\, to explore the brain waves in novel ways and to create mind altering soundscapes\, aural installations and musical compositions from extracted features of the psychedelic brain data. We also welcome multi-media artworks that combine aural elements with visual or haptic ones. \nThe project offers an unprecedented opportunity for sound artists  to transform the dynamic structures of consciousness into art. It also encourages scientists to experiment with innovative and novel analysis techniques with the aim to expand the way we usually look at brain wave data. The idea is to provide the creative space for the scientist\, with the unconventional input from artists\, to work in an unconstrained manner outside of the lab and to turn the results into something other than a number. To access someone’s state of consciousness with the current research methods available remains a challenge. Our pioneering project provides the opportunity to think outside of the box about how we can capture someone’s subjective\, mind-altering psychedelic journey. \nThe hackathon will be a two-day event over the weekend of the 18/19th March\, with Dr. Carhart-Harris introducing the dataset and research. The interdisciplinary 5 teams (consisting of 1 sound artist grouped with 2-4 neuroscientist/data scientists) will then spend the remainder of the time working on their responses to the brief. \n \nThis event is now fully booked. If you have any questions about this event or any of our workshops please contact workshops@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Workshop – Foundations of Electronics\, Sound and Synthesis with Tom Richards
DESCRIPTION:[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”workshop-foundations-of-electronics-sound-and-synthesis-with-tom-richards” show=”button-only”] \nMusic Hackspace presents a two day workshop with Tom Richards on the 22nd and 23rd of April. This will be an absolute beginners workshop\, ideal for those who are interested in DIY electronics and sound but don’t know where to start. It will also be useful for those starting out with analog/modular synths and wishing to get a better understanding of the underlying principles. \nRequirements: No prior experience necessary. \nDate: 22nd and 23rd April 2017. 11am-6pm \nFull Cost: £120. \n\nThis includes the workshop + a synth kit you will build and take home. The synth is a basic mono synth incorporating a vco\, vcf\, vca\, envelope generator and a basic sequencer. The design is modular in the sense that any one part can be isolated and used in other contexts. It is designed for speed and simplicity so that it’s do-able in a weekend and it illustrates the principles and prototyping techniques covered during the weekend.\nWhen you book your place\, there is a £20 reservation fee that will be deducted during the workshop from the £120 full price. You can pay the remaining £100 on the day (cash only). Please note there will be no refunds of the reservation fee in case of cancelling / not showing.\n\nOver two days Tom will guide participants through the following: \n\n     Fundamentals of electronics. Types of components and what they do.\n     Fundamentals of sound and synthesis.\n     Different synthesiser building blocks.\n     Reading schematics.\n     Using test tools – multimeters and oscilloscopes.\n     Where to find information and buy components.\n     Prototyping simple circuits.\n     How to solder.\n     Build a simple synthesiser to take home\, with notes on how to extend its possibilities afterwards.\n\nAfter this workshop\, participants should be able to better utilise the wealth of internet resources available\, and get started in building their own electronic instruments. \nPlease note this course will not cover arduino\, code or embedded applications – just pure old-school electronics. \nTom Richards is an artist\, musician\, DJ\, researcher and instrument designer working in London UK. He has walked the line between sonic art\, sculpture and music since graduating with an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art in 2004. Richards has built his own idiosyncratic modular electronic music system\, with which he creates slowly evolving and heavily textured polyrhythmic improvisations. He has performed and exhibited widely in the UK\, as well as internationally in the US\, Germany\, Peru\, Japan and Sweden. \nSelected works and live performances have taken place at Tate Britain\, The Queen Elizabeth Hall\, The Science Museum\, Spike Island\, Cafe Oto\, MK Gallery\, Bold Tendencies\, and Camden Arts Centre. \nHe has recently submitted his PhD (Goldsmiths/Science Museum) on the work of Daphne Oram: electronic music pioneer\, and founder member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This research included the re-design and construction of Oram’s Mini Oramics synthesizer\, a project that has since gained worldwide attention. \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”workshop-foundations-of-electronics-sound-and-synthesis-with-tom-richards” show=”button-only”] \nIf you have any questions about this event or any of our workshops please contact workshops@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Meetup - TidalCycles with Calum Gunn
DESCRIPTION:Following our first TidalCycles meetup in April\, we’re pleased to be bringing this back for round 2 on June 19th. \nThis one will be more hands on than last time so we encourage you to bring a laptop if you’d like to make some noise. Headphones might be a good idea too. This meetup should be suitable for anyone whether you’re an experienced Tidal user or have never programmed before. \nTidalCycles (or Tidal for short) is a programming language for live coding pattern. It allows you to make musical patterns with text\, describing sequences and ways of transforming and combining them\, exploring complex interactions between simple parts. \nTidal is open source and can be downloaded for free here. If you have any problems with installation we’d be happy to help out in the meetup. If you’re keen to develop your Tidal knowledge beforehand\, there are plenty of great resources available. In particular\, the official website\, the Github and previous Meetup performer PixelPusher’s Github.  \nThe meetup is organised by Calum Gunn and Music Hackspace. Calum makes computer music and runs Conditional\, a label\, radio show and night based in London. Further celebrity Tidal users to be announced soon.  \n \nDrinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact info@stagingmhs.local. \n

SUMMARY:Artist Talk - Martin & Lucia of SM-LL
DESCRIPTION:Martin Thompson and Lucia H Chung run the label SM-LL. Martin makes music under the name Pokk! And Typeface\, and Lucia as en creux. Together they produce under the name Reloc. Both their music and label share a minimal\, reductionist aesthetic. There is never excess\, no clutter. A single musical phrase may be extrapolated over a whole 12”\, given far more attention and space than it’d receive elsewhere. No one else is giving music space to breath like this. \nLucia and Martin will be coming in for a public conversation with Tom Mudd\, a close friend of the two. They’ll be playing demos and chatting about their minimal approach to music and running a label\, and also digging into Lucia’s event series\, Happened\, which has played host to various friends of Music Hackspace\, including Ewa Justka\, Graham Dunning\, and Aa3_Tzt.[RN500]. \n \n \nDoors for this event will open at 18:30. The talk will begin at 19:00 with time for Q&A afterwards. Drinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House.

Creative Research into Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP) is a research centre of the University of the Arts London dedicated to the exploration of the rich complexities of sound as an artistic practice. \nJennifer Lucy Allan is a writer and researcher looking at the links between sound\, weather and landscape. Jennifer co-runs the label Arc Light Editions\, and has hosted shows on Resonance FM. She has a weekly slot in the Guardian’s Guide and has written for Wire\, The Quietus and others. \nKevin Logan is a Manchester born artist based in London\, UK. His work embraces cross-disciplinary fields and incorporates installation\, sound\, moving-image and performance. He has exhibited and performed internationally\, had audio-visual works screened in festivals worldwide\, and had sound works on compilation CDs. \nMark Peter Wright is an artist and researcher working with experimental approaches to sound and listening. His practice explores the relationship between humans\, animals\, environments and their associated technologies of capture: critically and playfully generating debate through exhibitions\, performance and collaborative events. Questions that drive his projects pivot around how agency is performed between humans and animals; how technology and media are part of an ecological approach; and how listening can become an ethico-aesthetic arts practice. \n \nDoors for this event will open at 18:30. The talk will begin at 19:00 with time for Q&A afterwards. DESCRIPTION:[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”software-workshop-make-music-with-code-with-alo-allik-july-5″ show=”button-only”] \nIn this workshop we will explore many different ways to create sounds from scratch\, manipulate recorded sounds and compose these into music. Since computers are used virtually in almost any piece of recorded music in some way\, it becomes useful to have an insight into how music technology works behind the user interface or perhaps how it can be even more liberating and powerful without it. The SuperCollider programming environment provides an opportunity to explore sounds synthesis and algorithmic composition on a detailed level in real-time. The particular emphasis in this workshop will be on creating intelligent musical machines including interactive synthesizers with machine listening techniques and machine learning algorithms to aid the composition process. \nWe will be exploring 4 main topics: \n– introduction to sound synthesis including modulation\, filtering\, sampling and granular synthesis\n– making musical structures by scheduling and timing the synthesizers\n– building reactive synthesisers with triggers and machine listening\n– introduction to composition with machine learning \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”software-workshop-make-music-with-code-with-alo-allik-july-5″ show=”button-only”] \nFor any queries please contact workshops@stagingmhs.local \nAlo Allik is a sound artist who has performed his audiovisual works\, electroacoustic compositions\, eclectic DJ sets and live electronic music throughout the world at a number of festivals\, including Transmediale\, Piksel\, ISEA\, TodaysArt\, ShinyToys\, Pluto\, NIME\, etc..
