SUMMARY:Make music with code with Joanne Armitage\, part 3: Interaction and data
DESCRIPTION:[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”make-music-with-code-with-joanne-armitage-part-3-interaction-and-data” show=”button-only”] \nThroughout May\, June and July we have Joanne Armitage leading a series of three SuperCollider workshops. These workshops can loosely be thought of as beginner\, intermediate and advanced workshops\, and can be attended individually or as a complete series. \nWorkshop 1: Synthesis Techniques (May 30th) \nWorkshop 2: Time\, structures and pattern (June 19th) \nWorkshop 3: Interaction and Data (July 11th) \nIndividual workshops cost £30. You can also book a place on all three workshops at a discounted rate of £75 here. \nThis third workshop will focus on interaction and data (into other software/using controllers). It’s recommended that you’re quite familiar with SuperCollider for this workshop. Attending the first or second workshops in the series would be adequate for this. \nFull workshop details coming soon. \nSuperCollider is a powerful\, open-source\, cross-platform\, audio engine and programming language\, used not only to create music\, but also for machine learning\, audio/music reactive installations\, performance\, interactive systems\, research\, live-coding and much more. \nRequirements: You will need your own computer (OSX / Windows/ Linux)\, and a pair of headphones. \nJoanne is a creative technologist and artist working with sound\, physical computing\, digital media and interaction design. Her current practice-based research explores how digital sound can connect with the body through haptic feedback. She is part of livecoding duo Algobabez with Shelly Knotts. \nWe can offer a student discount of 10% off this workshop. Please email us for a discount code. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. SUMMARY:Creative electronics: building experimental sound circuits from scratch with Casper Electronics
DESCRIPTION:[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”creative-electronics-building-experimental-sound-circuits-from-scratch-with-casper-electronics” show=”button-only”] \nOver the course of 2 days participants will learn about the curious and inspiring behaviour of electricity while building a variety of interactive sound circuits. Prior experience with electronics is very helpful but is not necessary. This workshop will utilise a circuit building tool designed by Edwards called the OMSynth which allows users to start tweaking and hacking functional circuits in minutes. The OMSynth is included in the cost of the workshop. If you already have an OMSynth and would like to attend\, please get in touch. \nAll tools and components will be provided. \nPeter Edwards is an american artist and inventor and founder of casperelectronics\, a DIY electronics resource and icon of the early 2000s circuit bending movement. Edwards currently lives in the Czech Republic where he collaborates with experimental synth design company Bast Instruments. His practice was founded in a formal study of visual and performative arts and was later enriched by a study of electrical engineering and electro acoustics. His focus is primarily on bringing the playful and creatively inspiring behaviour of electricity to the public through performance\, education and instrument design. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nIf you have any questions about this event or any of our workshops please contact workshops@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Internal Motivations workshop with Sheryl Cheung
DESCRIPTION:Internal motivations is a workshop for new imaginations of internal martial arts through the perspective of sound. In this exercise we will explore different Taoist concepts in relation to sound and energy. Internal martial arts is a seemingly passive but internally vigorous form of martial arts that stresses on breathing\, energy circulation\, external and internal movements\, and expanded consciousness. How may the soundscape of this mind and body tradition be re-interpreted in today’s context? \n \nActivities: \n1 Listening session of film soundtracks \n2 Study of ancient martial art scores \n3 Recording your own body movements & simple collective folly techniques \n4 Creating soundscapes (can be finished later and submitted by the end of July) \nProvided materials: \n1 Excerpts of film soundtracks and martial arts documentaries \n2 Ancient scriptures that illustrate internal body movement \n3 Recordings of internal body sounds and natural forces \n4 Examples of new martial arts exercises and sounds \nIt’s recommended that participants bring a laptop. Prior experience working with music is not required.   \nWith the participant’s consent\, completed soundtracks will be compiled into a collective album and published on lololol.net\, an online platform for mind and body exercises\, which will presented in this year’s Bangkok Biennial in August. \nSheryl Cheung works with sound\, installation and performance to explore a material concept of life. Perceiving life as a force\, a mobility that drives our innate persistence to live\, Sheryl is especially interested in the potential of vulnerable\, ambiguous\, and internal efforts that lead us to deeper awareness of the nature of being. \nThrough ongoing explorations of soundscape\, energy fields\, and research into ancient and contemporary discourses on natural life\, Sheryl pursues projects that explore the space of sound as cosmological readings of today’s increasingly post-wilderness world. \nSheryl Cheung was raised in Taipei\, New York\, and Beijing. Her work has been shown at the Taipei Fine Art Museum\, Taipei Contemporary Art Center\, Lacking Sound Festival; Chronus Art Center\, Shanghai; JOLT Arts Festival\, and Jeju Art Museum\, Korea. \nThis workshop is curated by Lucia H Chung (Happened) as part of her residency with Music Hackspace\, which aims to promote and give visibility to artists from Taiwan working with sound. Throughout July\, August and September\, four Taiwanese artists chosen by Lucia will be taking up short term residencies at Music Hackspace and delivering workshops\, artist talks and performances. Lucia’s residency will culminate with a final night of performances in late September. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them.

SUMMARY:July TidalCycles Meetup with Lucy Cheesman (women & nonbinary only)
DESCRIPTION:Our TidalCycles meetups are a series of informal\, participatory meetups focusing on Alex McLean’s open source\, accessible livecoding platform. They’re very loosely structured\, with occasional short talks and performances. \nThis meetup is for any self identifying women and nonbinary people\, and will be hosted by Lucy Cheesman. Lucy Cheesman makes music under the name Heavy Lifting in Tidal and Foxdot\, and co-runs Tidal Club Sheffield with Alex McLean. She is also a member of TYPE (The Yorkshire Programming Ensemble). \n \nNo programming experience is necessary for these meetups. They are open to all abilities and are an excellent opportunity to learn how to start making music with code. We encourage you to bring a laptop and headphones to make the most of the meetup. There’s no need to have come to the previous meetups to come to this one. \nTidalCycles is a programming language for live coding pattern. It allows you to make musical patterns with text\, describing sequences and ways of transforming and combining them\, exploring complex interactions between simple parts. \nTidal is open source and can be downloaded for free here. If you have any problems with installation we’d be happy to help out in the meetup. If you’re keen to develop your Tidal knowledge beforehand\, there are plenty of great resources available. See our document of resources for independent learning here. \nThe meetup is organised by Music Hackspace. \nDrinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact info@stagingmhs.local. \nImage by MindAperture.
