SUMMARY:Meetup – TidalCycles with Calum Gunn
DESCRIPTION:TidalCycles (or Tidal for short) is a programming language for live coding pattern. \nIt allows you to make musical patterns with text\, describing sequences and ways of transforming and combining them\, exploring complex interactions between simple parts. \nThe first London Tidal meetup features short talks from Jack Armitage\, PhD Student in Media & Arts Technologies and musician better known as Lil Data\, and Guy John\, creator of LiveCodeLab\, who will be giving us a brief introduction to Haskell\, the underlying language of Tidal. \nThe meetup is organised by Calum Gunn and the Music Hackspace. Calum makes computer music and runs Conditional\, a label\, radio show and night based in London.  \nAfter this meetup\, the Music Hackspace will be hosting a series of monthly Wednesday-evening software workshops focusing on how to make music with computers. The workshops will be led by invited artists including Shelly Knotts\, Alex McLean and Alo Allik amongst others. \n \nDrinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact info@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Workshop – Foundations of Electronics\, Sound and Synthesis with Tom Richards
DESCRIPTION:[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”workshop-foundations-of-electronics-sound-and-synthesis-with-tom-richards” show=”button-only”] \nMusic Hackspace presents a two day workshop with Tom Richards on the 22nd and 23rd of April. This will be an absolute beginners workshop\, ideal for those who are interested in DIY electronics and sound but don’t know where to start. It will also be useful for those starting out with analog/modular synths and wishing to get a better understanding of the underlying principles. \nRequirements: No prior experience necessary. \nDate: 22nd and 23rd April 2017. 11am-6pm \nFull Cost: £120. \n\nThis includes the workshop + a synth kit you will build and take home. The synth is a basic mono synth incorporating a vco\, vcf\, vca\, envelope generator and a basic sequencer. The design is modular in the sense that any one part can be isolated and used in other contexts. It is designed for speed and simplicity so that it’s do-able in a weekend and it illustrates the principles and prototyping techniques covered during the weekend.\nWhen you book your place\, there is a £20 reservation fee that will be deducted during the workshop from the £120 full price. You can pay the remaining £100 on the day (cash only). Please note there will be no refunds of the reservation fee in case of cancelling / not showing.\n\nOver two days Tom will guide participants through the following: \n\n     Fundamentals of electronics. Types of components and what they do.\n     Fundamentals of sound and synthesis.\n     Different synthesiser building blocks.\n     Reading schematics.\n     Using test tools – multimeters and oscilloscopes.\n     Where to find information and buy components.\n     Prototyping simple circuits.\n     How to solder.\n     Build a simple synthesiser to take home\, with notes on how to extend its possibilities afterwards.\n\nAfter this workshop\, participants should be able to better utilise the wealth of internet resources available\, and get started in building their own electronic instruments. \nPlease note this course will not cover arduino\, code or embedded applications – just pure old-school electronics. \nTom Richards is an artist\, musician\, DJ\, researcher and instrument designer working in London UK. He has walked the line between sonic art\, sculpture and music since graduating with an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art in 2004. Richards has built his own idiosyncratic modular electronic music system\, with which he creates slowly evolving and heavily textured polyrhythmic improvisations. He has performed and exhibited widely in the UK\, as well as internationally in the US\, Germany\, Peru\, Japan and Sweden. \nSelected works and live performances have taken place at Tate Britain\, The Queen Elizabeth Hall\, The Science Museum\, Spike Island\, Cafe Oto\, MK Gallery\, Bold Tendencies\, and Camden Arts Centre. \nHe has recently submitted his PhD (Goldsmiths/Science Museum) on the work of Daphne Oram: electronic music pioneer\, and founder member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This research included the re-design and construction of Oram’s Mini Oramics synthesizer\, a project that has since gained worldwide attention. \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”workshop-foundations-of-electronics-sound-and-synthesis-with-tom-richards” show=”button-only”] \nIf you have any questions about this event or any of our workshops please contact workshops@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk – Paul Prudence
DESCRIPTION:Paul Prudence is an audio-visual performer working with generative video and abstract soundscapes. His work\, which has been performed internationally\, focuses on the ways in which sound\, space and form can be cross-wired to create live-cinematic visual-music experiences. \nUsing code as raw material in his work\, Paul creates compositions that evolve and change form. He also uses data and incoming audio signals as input to modulate visual shapes. \nPaul maintains the weblog Dataisnature exploring the historical and contemporary interrelationships between natural processes\, computational systems and procedural-based art practices. He also writes for Neural and HOLO magazines. \nPortfolio at: transphormetic.com \n \n \nDoors for this event will open at 18:30. The talk will begin at 19:00 with time for Q&A afterwards. Drinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nIf you have any questions about this event or any of our talks please contact info@stagingmhs.local.
