SUMMARY:Livestream: TidalCycles - growing a language for algorithmic pattern
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 20th May 6pm UK / 7pm Berlin / 10am LA / 1pm NYC \nIn this livestreamed interview\, Alex McLean retraces the history and intent that prompted him to develop TidalCycles alongside ‘Algorave’ live performance events\, contributing to establish Live Coding as an art discipline. \n Alex started TidalCycles project for exploring musical patterns in 2009\, and it is now a healthy free/open-source software project and among the most well-known live coding environments for music. \nTidalCycles represents musical patterns as a function of time\, making them easy to make\, combine and transform. It is generally partnered with the SuperDirt hybrid synthesiser/sampler\, created by Julian Rohrhuber using SuperCollider.  \nCulturally\, TidalCycles is tightly linked to Algorave\, a movement created by Alex McLean and Nick Collins in 2011\, where musicians and VJs make algorithms to dance to. \nWhere to watch –  \n  \nFacebook –  https://www.facebook.com/musichackspace/ \nOverview of speaker \nAlex McLean is a musician and researcher based in Sheffield UK. As well as working on TidalCycles\, he also researches algorithmic patterns in ancient weaving\, as part of the PENELOPE project based in Deutsches Museum\, Munich. He has organised hundreds of events in the digital arts\, including the annual AlgoMech festival of Algorithmic and Mechanical Movement. Alex co-founded the international conferences on live coding and live interfaces\, and co-edited the Oxford Handbook of Algorithmic Music. As live coder has performed worldwide\, including Sonar\, No Bounds\, Ars Electronica\, Bluedot and Glastonbury festivals.

SUMMARY:Livestream: Nestup - A Language for Musical Rhythms
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time: Monday 10th May 6pm UK / 7pm Berlin / 10am LA / 1pm NYC \nIn this livestreamed interview\, we will speak with Sam Tarakajian and Alex Van Gils\, who’ve built a fantastic live-coding environment that works within an Ableton Live device called Nestup.  \nThe programs we use to make music have a lot of implicit decisions baked into them\, especially in their graphical interfaces. Nestup began as a thought experiment\, trying to see if embedding a text editor inside Live could open up new creative possibilities. We think the answer is that yes\, text can work well alongside a piano roll and a traditional musical score\, as a concise and expressive way to define complex rhythms. \nWith Nestup\, you define for yourself any size of rhythmic unit\, any sort of rhythmic subdivision\, and with any scaling factor. These language features open your rhythm programming up to musical ideas such as metric modulation\, nested tuplets\, complex polyrhythm\, and more. Rhythms from musical styles which would have been prohibitively difficult to program in a DAW can therefore be rendered in MIDI\, such as rhythms from Armenian folk musics or “new complexity” compositions. \nOverview of speakers \nSam is a Brooklyn based developer and creative coder. Sam works for Cycling ‘74 and develops independent projects at Cutelab NYC. Alex is a composer\, performer\, and generative video artist based in Brooklyn.  \nSam and Alex have been making art with music and code together for over 10 years\, beginning with a composition for double bass and Nintendo Wiimote while undergraduates and continuing to include electroacoustic compositions\, live AR performance art\, installation art\, Max4Live devices\, and now Nestup\, the domain-specific language for musical rhythms. \nWhere to watch? \nYouTube – \n \n

SUMMARY:Ritual Laboratory #2; a technology to transform consciousness
DESCRIPTION:The second instalment in a series of participatory rituals\, based on the 12 mythic Labours of Herakleos. Forming part of an ongoing research & development project considering the relationship between sound & movement performance & altered states of consciousness. \nEach session of the laboratory focuses on balancing a sequential zodiacal energy. We begin with Aries – The Head (Thoughts) and work down to Pisces – The Feet (Deeds). This month we continue with Taurus (Desire)\, utilising a variety of techniques that function as rites of passage. \nThe embodiment of each myth functions as an interface\, to construct the components of ritual form\, and to explore the subjective impact of trance inducing use of sound\, movement\, light\, scent\, and embodied narrative. \nEach Labour of Herakleos as narrative score\, catalyses a dialogue between musicians and performers\, facilitating an immersive experience of the myth. These 12 Labours share significant parallels with the astronomical movement of the Sun\, projected through the symbolism of the zodiacal constellations in a calendar year. Harnessing the cyclical changes in our natural environment as a basis for structure and objectivity\, we aim to fall into rhythm with the cycles of the natural world. \n \nPlease email curators@stagingmhs.local for any questions. \n…………………………………………………… \nAn experimental laboratory of 12 events. No prior knowledge required. Everyone welcome! \nWe will begin each session  by sharing a discussion regarding the symbolism of the myth\, and how the Labour will play out. Secondly we explore features of trance induction\, hypnotic phenomena and their role in creative practice. Lastly we will perform the myth together\, and share feedback afterwards. \nInstrumentation will vary as we explore the intersection of traditional trance instruments and contemporary production tools.

SUMMARY:Music Hackspace & Individual Collective pres. An evening with Downwards Records
DESCRIPTION:Somerset House Studios residents Music Hackspace have joined forces with London event curators Individual Collective; to present a panel celebrating the 25th anniversary of the eponymous electronic music label: Downwards. \n \nBorn in 1993\, Downwards was launched from the gritty industrial heartland of Birmingham. In doing so\, founder Karl O’Connor AKA Regis\, crystallised a definitive direction beyond the confines of the 90’s electronic music scene and the definition of ‘Techno’. \nDownwards’ longevity has continued to buck the trend of many independent Labels in Electronic music: refusing to be constrained by genre; not only weathering the death and rebirth of vinyl\, but in learning how to publish a book and consistently releasing fresh creative content with clever juxtaposition of musicianship. Artists such as Justin Broadrick and Mick Harris (Napalm Death) sit alongside newcomers such as  Samuel Kerridge\, DVA Damas and Ora Iso. If that wasn’t enough; Downwards collaborations continue to inject layered depth and renewed energy to the club scene: the recent rebirth of British Murder Boys (Regis & Surgeon)\, Ugandan Methods (Regis & Ancient Methods) and the much anticipated reimagined CUB (Regis & Simon Shreeve) premiering in December. \nThe panel will be hosted by The Quietus’ Luke Turner who will be joined in conversation by legendary electronic producer Andrea Parker\, Karl O’Connor himself and long time Downwards artist and NTS Radio broadcaster Samuel Kerridge. It will be a unique opportunity to hear their personal perspectives and to follow the evolution of the label. In this intimate setting\, the audience will also have the chance to interact with the panel and ask questions. \nFollowing this event Individual Collective will host the last night of the Downwards 25 year tour at Corsica Studios on 1st December where they will host the world premiere of the first ever CUB live show. \nWith this panel Music Hackspace starts a series of discussion events looking into precarious practices in electronic music\, DIY publishing and London based collectives promoting experimental and electronic music. \nDoors for the event will open and 18:30 and the panel will begin at 19:00. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact info@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Performance: Yen Tzu Chang
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nTaiwanese artist Yen Tzu Chang presents an artist talk followed by her Whose Scalpel performance. \nWhose Scalpel is a sound performance combined with visuals and a 3D printed installation\, realised with a framework for medical image processing. Mixing several methods from art and science\, it is an imagination of the future and presents issues of the relationship between humans and machines through simulated heart surgery. The concept is developed out the application of sound in medical science\, coronary artery bypass surgery and machine learning. The background story of the performance is based on the assumption that in the near future a surgeon works with the machine which can give advice during surgery. The installation is built according to the performer’s real heart from MRI scans and is enlarged from its actual size. It is designed to interact when the performer plugs in audio cables and bridges connections\, much like the method of coronary artery bypass surgery. During the performance\, the storyline is lead by the sound and video of medical images and live performance from the webcam. The video and the sound also present the machine which gives instruction to the performer as a physician. The patient (the heart) who is operated on symbolises human’s conscience and faith. The performance asks a question relating to the issue of the machine and human: “If machines can reason even better than human\, will we as humans lose some abilities and even not believe ourselves anymore?” \n \nThe project was developed during the residency STEAM Imaging designed by Fraunhofer MEVIS and hosted together with Ars Electronica within the European Digital Art and Science Network. \nYen Tzu Chang (b. 1991\, TW) is a Taiwanese media artist who lives and studies in Linz\, Austria. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the new media art department of the Taipei National University of Art. Since 2014\, she has been studying for her master’s degree at the Interface Culture department of the Kunstuniversität Linz. Until now\, she has given performances and exhibited her works in many international conferences and festivals\, such as Ars Electronica Festival\, roBOt 08 Festival\, Linux Audio Conference\, ISEA\, Digital Design Weekend in London and etc. She had a touring performance with Renick Bell and Calum Gunn in Japan in 2016. Recently\, she is participating an interdisciplinary project organized by Ars Electronica and Fraunhofer MEVIS\, which including an art residency program and cooperating with the scientist – Sabrina Haase to bring the STEAM workshops for German and Austrian pupils. The residency artistic outcome has been presented at the Ars Electronica Festival 2017. \nThis event is curated by Lucia H Chung (Happened) as part of her residency with Music Hackspace\, which aims to promote and give visibility to artists from Taiwan working with sound. SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Performance: Sheryl Cheung
DESCRIPTION:Sheryl Cheung works with sound\, installation and performance to explore a material concept of life. Perceiving life as a force\, a mobility that drives our innate persistence to live\, Sheryl is especially interested in the potential of vulnerable\, ambiguous\, and internal efforts that lead us to deeper awareness of the nature of being. \n \nThrough ongoing explorations of soundscape\, energy fields\, and research into ancient and contemporary discourses on natural life\, Sheryl pursues projects that explore the space of sound as cosmological readings of today’s increasingly post-wilderness world. \nSheryl Cheung was raised in Taipei\, New York\, and Beijing. Her work has been shown at the Taipei Fine Art Museum\, Taipei Contemporary Art Center\, Lacking Sound Festival; Chronus Art Center\, Shanghai; JOLT Arts Festival\, and Jeju Art Museum\, Korea. \nThis event is curated by Lucia H Chung (Happened) as part of her residency with Music Hackspace\, which aims to promote and give visibility to artists from Taiwan working with sound. SUMMARY:Artist Talk - Ray Lee
DESCRIPTION:Ray Lee is an award-winning sound artist and composer. He creates spinning\, whirling\, and pendulous sound installations and performances that explore “circles of ether\,” the invisible forces that surround us. \nHis immersive and mesmerising works such as the world-wide hit Siren\, Ethometric Museum and his monumental outdoor work Chorus aim to make contemporary music accessible and engaging for a wide audience. Siren toured the world with significant British Council support. \n \nEthometric Museum won him the 2012 British Composer of the Year for Sonic Art. Force Field was awarded an honorary mention in the 2008 Prix Ars Electronica. He is a Professor of Sound Art at Oxford Brookes University. Ray is an associate artist of OCM (Oxford Contemporary Music). \n“As an artist I explore my fascinations with the world. I am fascinated by themes that include the emergence of the scientific method\, the development of technology\, and the way science represents our view of the universe. I have a childlike fascination with radios\, radio waves\, magnetism. There is a magic in the act of turning on a radio and receiving signals through the Ether or in holding two magnets in your hands and feeling this invisible force pulling your hands together or pushing them apart. \nPhysicality is essential to the work and it is inherent in both the structures I build and the sound that is created. I build machines that make sound. The fact that they often move means that the sound itself is being modulated by the movement. In my approach\, it is not possible for me to have the sound in any way separate to the physical structure\, object\, or machine that produces the sound. \nLive performance is an important part of what I do. I am intrigued by the relationship that emerges between the performers as operators and workers of the machine and the machines themselves. As humans\, we relate to other humans more than we relate to machines\, but we also want to breathe life into inanimate objects. Combining kinetic machines with performers who work with\, look after\, monitor\, control these devices enables the audience to start creating their own narrative about the work.” \nDoors for this event will open at 18:30. The talk will begin at 19:00 with time for Q&A afterwards. Drinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. SUMMARY:Artist Talk - Kacper Ziemianin’s LightSeq
DESCRIPTION:LightSeq is an award-winning DIY instrument and performance system for live electronic music. It allows users to program any sequence of lights which are then translated into sound. This combination opens up a lot of possibilities for controlling\, structuring and interacting with sound. This instrument tries to addresses an issue of ‚liveness‘ of electronic music performance. How does the audience know if the performance is really live? How can we relate to the actions that the musicians are taking onstage? In case of ‘LighSeq’ every sound is created and manipulated by various light sources. This creates a direct link between the visual and sonic realm. Watch LightSeq in action.  \n \nDoors for this event will open at 18:30. The talk will begin at 19:00 with time for Q&A afterwards. Drinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet.
