SUMMARY:Workshop – Programming for Modular Synthesisers with Max MSP and Gen with Rebel Technology
DESCRIPTION:[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”a-music-hackspace-workshop-with-rebel-technology-programming-for-modular-synthesisers-with-max-msp-and-gen” show=”button-only”] \nMusic hackspace presents a one-day workshop with Rebel Technology. Participants will learn how to use Max MSP’s Gen to program synths and effects which can then be run on an OWL Modular synthesiser\, and used expressively in a modular environment. \nThe workshop combines programming with hands-on music making: a fun and effective way to learn new skills! \nThe workshop is for anyone wanting to learn musical programming and modular synthesis to get beyond the limits of traditional music software\, by designing their own personal\, unique musical instruments. \nRequirements: Computer with Max MSP + Google Chrome installed. Some basic computer skills and enthusiasm for electronic music\, no prior knowledge of Max required. \nThe workshop will be led by Cherif and Adam\, and Rebel Technology will be providing OWL Modules. \n11am: \n1.)  Introduction to the Max MSP visual programming environment and Gen \n– A quick overview of Max and its applications. \n– What is Gen? \n– Difference between Gen and Max \n– Low level DSP and its applications (e.g. Hardware integration/Filter design) \n2.) Project 1: DSP synthesis \n– Learn how to build a synth in Gen \n– How to upload\, compile and run a Gen patch in the web browser. \n1pm (lunch) \n2pm: \n3.) Introduction to Modular synthesis \n– A short introduction to modular synthesis\, looking at concepts such as control voltage (cv) and triggers. \n2.30pm: \n4.) Software and Modular Integration \n– How to run your sine wave synthesiser on the OWL Modular \n– How to control and play this patch on a modular set up\, and what this brings to the software. \n3.30pm: \n6.) Project 2: Effects \n– We start building a simple but great sounding tape delay\, and then look at how we can improve it with feedback and a low pass filter to create a powerful Stereo Tape Delay. \n– Using the push button and our logic from (8)\, we then make a tap delay to synchronise tempos \n4.30pm (Cookie Break. Your music will be 33% better after you go eat some cookies) \n5pm: \n8.) Recap and modular jam! \n– Make some noise with all the patches you’ve been building! \n  \nRebel Technology make innovative\, programmable modular synths at Fort Rebel in Finsbury Park. They are the makers of the OWL Modular and the OWL Pedal which can run patches written by the user in Max MSP\, Pure Data\, FAUST or C++\, allowing everyone to develop their own unique hardware instruments. \nCherif Hashizume is a musician\, programmer\, producer and audio engineer. As head engineer and producer at Cafe Music Studios\, he’s worked with artists such as Brian Eno\, David Byrne and Jon Hopkins. He releases his own music via De-fence Records and Humble Soul Records. \nDr Adam Parkinson is musician\, programmer and teacher. Working in the departments of music and computing at Goldsmiths\, University of London\, he teaches modules in Max MSP and electronic music\, whilst researching new musical technologies. SUMMARY:Artist Talk – CRISAP Panel with  Jennifer Lucy Allan\, Kevin Logan and Mark Peter Wright
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel on sonic art practices with CRISAP members Jennifer Lucy Allan\, Mark Peter Wright and Kevin Logan. Creative Research into Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP) is a research centre of the University of the Arts London dedicated to the exploration of the rich complexities of sound as an artistic practice. \nJennifer Lucy Allan is a writer and researcher looking at the links between sound\, weather and landscape. Jennifer co-runs the label Arc Light Editions\, and has hosted shows on Resonance FM. She has a weekly slot in the Guardian’s Guide and has written for Wire\, The Quietus and others. \nKevin Logan is a Manchester born artist based in London\, UK. His work embraces cross-disciplinary fields and incorporates installation\, sound\, moving-image and performance. He has exhibited and performed internationally\, had audio-visual works screened in festivals worldwide\, and had sound works on compilation CDs. \nMark Peter Wright is an artist and researcher working with experimental approaches to sound and listening. His practice explores the relationship between humans\, animals\, environments and their associated technologies of capture: critically and playfully generating debate through exhibitions\, performance and collaborative events. Questions that drive his projects pivot around how agency is performed between humans and animals; how technology and media are part of an ecological approach; and how listening can become an ethico-aesthetic arts practice. \n \nDoors for this event will open at 18:30. The talk will begin at 19:00 with time for Q&A afterwards. SUMMARY:Workshop – Sines Brain Wave and Sound Art Hackathon with AXNS
DESCRIPTION:On 18 – 19th March AXNS Collective\, in partnership with Imperial College London and Music Hackspace\, will be giving teams of sound artists\, neuroscientists and data analysts exclusive access to brain wave data from groundbreaking LSD research. \nThe two day hackathon event will bring together sound artists to work alongside neuroscientists and data analysts\, to explore the brain waves in novel ways and to create mind altering soundscapes\, aural installations and musical compositions from extracted features of the psychedelic brain data. We also welcome multi-media artworks that combine aural elements with visual or haptic ones. \nThe project offers an unprecedented opportunity for sound artists  to transform the dynamic structures of consciousness into art. It also encourages scientists to experiment with innovative and novel analysis techniques with the aim to expand the way we usually look at brain wave data. The idea is to provide the creative space for the scientist\, with the unconventional input from artists\, to work in an unconstrained manner outside of the lab and to turn the results into something other than a number. To access someone’s state of consciousness with the current research methods available remains a challenge. Our pioneering project provides the opportunity to think outside of the box about how we can capture someone’s subjective\, mind-altering psychedelic journey. \nThe hackathon will be a two-day event over the weekend of the 18/19th March\, with Dr. Carhart-Harris introducing the dataset and research. The interdisciplinary 5 teams (consisting of 1 sound artist grouped with 2-4 neuroscientist/data scientists) will then spend the remainder of the time working on their responses to the brief. \n \nThis event is now fully booked.
