SUMMARY:Human Instruments presents the Haptic Baton
DESCRIPTION:We’re pleased to welcome accessibility instrument builders Human Instruments presenting their new project\, Haptic Baton\, a conductors baton that communicates to visually impaired players. The baton captures the speed\, angle\, attack and sway of the conductor’s hand in real time and beams it directly to all players wearing receiver bands. They feel the expression and timing of the conductor – just as if they were seeing the baton itself. \n \nIn the event\, founder Vahakn Matossian will give a presentation on the Baton and other projects from Human Instruments. \nWatch the BBC Stories documentary on our newest project with The Paraorchestra and Friends and Korean marimba virtuouso Kyungho Jeon. \n \n  \nHuman Instruments is an organisation which researches\, designs and develops high quality musical instruments for people with physical disabilities\, creating opportunity by designing and building beautifully crafted musical devices to rival traditional orchestral instruments. \nDoors for this event will open at 18:30. The talk will begin at 19:00 with time for Q&A afterwards. Drinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nFor any questions please email info@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:January TidalCycles Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Our TidalCycles meetups are a series of informal\, participatory meetups focusing on Alex Mclean’s open source\, accessible livecoding platform. They’re very loosely structured\, with occasional short talks and performances. \nNo programming experience is necessary for these meetups. They are open to all abilities and are an excellent opportunity to learn how to start making music with code. We encourage you to bring a laptop and headphones to make the most of the meetup. There’s no need to have come to the previous meetups to come to this one. \n \nTidalCycles is a programming language for live coding pattern. It allows you to make musical patterns with text\, describing sequences and ways of transforming and combining them\, exploring complex interactions between simple parts. \nTidal is open source and can be downloaded for free here. If you have any problems with installation we’d be happy to help out in the meetup. If you’re keen to develop your Tidal knowledge beforehand\, there are plenty of great resources available. See our document of resources for independent learning here. \nThe meetup is organised by Music Hackspace. \nDrinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact info@stagingmhs.local. \nPhoto by Antonio Roberts (http://www.hellocatfood.com/)

SUMMARY:Music Hackspace & Individual Collective pres. An evening with Downwards Records
DESCRIPTION:Somerset House Studios residents Music Hackspace have joined forces with London event curators Individual Collective; to present a panel celebrating the 25th anniversary of the eponymous electronic music label: Downwards. \n \nBorn in 1993\, Downwards was launched from the gritty industrial heartland of Birmingham. In doing so\, founder Karl O’Connor AKA Regis\, crystallised a definitive direction beyond the confines of the 90’s electronic music scene and the definition of ‘Techno’. \nDownwards’ longevity has continued to buck the trend of many independent Labels in Electronic music: refusing to be constrained by genre; not only weathering the death and rebirth of vinyl\, but in learning how to publish a book and consistently releasing fresh creative content with clever juxtaposition of musicianship. Artists such as Justin Broadrick and Mick Harris (Napalm Death) sit alongside newcomers such as  Samuel Kerridge\, DVA Damas and Ora Iso. If that wasn’t enough; Downwards collaborations continue to inject layered depth and renewed energy to the club scene: the recent rebirth of British Murder Boys (Regis & Surgeon)\, Ugandan Methods (Regis & Ancient Methods) and the much anticipated reimagined CUB (Regis & Simon Shreeve) premiering in December. \nThe panel will be hosted by The Quietus’ Luke Turner who will be joined in conversation by legendary electronic producer Andrea Parker\, Karl O’Connor himself and long time Downwards artist and NTS Radio broadcaster Samuel Kerridge. It will be a unique opportunity to hear their personal perspectives and to follow the evolution of the label. In this intimate setting\, the audience will also have the chance to interact with the panel and ask questions. \nFollowing this event Individual Collective will host the last night of the Downwards 25 year tour at Corsica Studios on 1st December where they will host the world premiere of the first ever CUB live show. \nWith this panel Music Hackspace starts a series of discussion events looking into precarious practices in electronic music\, DIY publishing and London based collectives promoting experimental and electronic music. \nDoors for the event will open and 18:30 and the panel will begin at 19:00. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact info@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Electronic Music from Field Recordings workshop with NSDOS – Part of ASSEMBLY
DESCRIPTION:  \nAs part of our final residency in 2018 we’re collaborating with Somerset House Studios in a jointly produced workshop presenting French artist NSDOS in November\, also part of the Studios’ new experimental music programme– ASSEMBLY. Paris based NSDOS –aka Kirikoo Des– is a hybrid artist who works simultaneously on music\, dance\, digital art\, and builds his own instruments. \nDuring the workshop participants will create sounds and music through data generated by video-tracking and field recordings\, focusing on how musicians capture\, manipulate and perform data. Alongside the workshop\, on Saturday 17th November NSDOS will perform live as part of ASSEMBLY. \n  \n\n  \nOver the weekend (11am-5pm Saturday and 11am-6pm Sunday)\, participants are invited to make musical patches from field recordings capturing sounds and datasets off-location on Saturday\, followed by Sunday’s programming and composition sessions at Somerset House Studios. The workshop is targeted at entry level audiences with interests in music\, dance and digital\, who are interested to discover new digital audio workstations. \nParticipants will need to bring their own laptops. Free one month licenses of Usine Hollyhock (NSDOS’ DAW of choice) will be provided. Tutorials and introductions to this particular software will take place during the weekend. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. For any questions please email workshops@stagingmhs.local \n  \nNSDOS\nParis-based NSDOS – aka Kirikoo Des – is a hybrid artist who works simultaneously on music\, dance\, digital art\, and builds his own instruments. After studying dance\, Des felt the need to create his own sound in order to explore movement. Unrestrained by existing technological tools and softwares\, he prefers creating his own mediums: futurist instruments made of old audio converters (carte son)\, Gameboy emulators\, pieces of metal dismantled and weld together giving form to surreal machines. Surrounded by his hybrid tools\, NSDOS unravels the rectilinear anatomy of techno music. Textures are exploded\, sounds mutilated\, and brought back to their essence. \nASSEMBLY\nA celebration of contemporary electronic and experimental music and the makers behind it\, curated by Somerset House Studios. Putting artistic process and community at the forefront\, this packed weekend series will feature newly commissioned performances\, installations and discussion from the Studios’ artists and the best international talent. Artists include Gazelle Twin\, Jennifer Walshe\, Paul Purgas\, Vessel\, Lucy Railton and more. Discover the full programme here. \n

SUMMARY:Hacking Buddhist Chanting Machines with Lu Yi
DESCRIPTION:In the first part of this workshop\, Lu Yi will introduce Buddhist chanting machines. These are small sound players sold throughout Taiwan\, China and Japan that play Buddhist chants on repetitive loops and are often used at religious ceremonies and on special dates. Lu Yi will talk about how people use these machines in both normal and abnormal ways by introducing some artist videos which demonstrate the potential of repurposing these objects. \n \nSecond\, will be hacking chanting machines by accessing their small circuit boards inside and finding their clock resistors. This can be done by exploring the circuit board with a wet finger. By touching the resistor with your wet finger you can also change the pitch of the machine. Participants will then be replacing the clock resistors with variable resistors to give more control over the chanting machine’s sound. Finally\, at the end of the workshop all participants will be invited to join in a live improvisational jam session. \nAll tools and materials will be provided by Lu Yi and Music Hackspace. \nLu Yi is a sound artist and a member of Soundwatch Studio. She obtained a master’s degree in Applied Arts from National Chiao Tung University\, Taiwan. SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Performance: Lien-Cheng Wang
DESCRIPTION:Following his workshop\, Lien-Cheng Wang will deliver an artist talk on his practice around generative art\, as well as a performance\, titled Horizon. \nHorizon is an audio-visual performance which is based on an interactive program. This program allows users to enter keywords and it can use the result of images from Google’s engine into a video in real-time. According to the keyword\, the program will automatically adjust the position of images\, positioning all of them in the centre of the screen. The images searched are the experiences and imagination of people from all walks of life that were uploaded into Google. The results of keywords are the common experience and imagination of all people in the world. This performance is a collection of common experience from people. But the video also presents a kind of strange sense. This artwork discuss among artificial intelligence\, collective consciousness\, and body perception. \n \nLien-Cheng Wang is a new media artist\, open source education collaborator and audiovisual performer\, residing in Taipei\, Taiwan. SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Performance: Yen Tzu Chang
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nTaiwanese artist Yen Tzu Chang presents an artist talk followed by her Whose Scalpel performance. \nWhose Scalpel is a sound performance combined with visuals and a 3D printed installation\, realised with a framework for medical image processing. Mixing several methods from art and science\, it is an imagination of the future and presents issues of the relationship between humans and machines through simulated heart surgery. The concept is developed out the application of sound in medical science\, coronary artery bypass surgery and machine learning. The background story of the performance is based on the assumption that in the near future a surgeon works with the machine which can give advice during surgery. The installation is built according to the performer’s real heart from MRI scans and is enlarged from its actual size. It is designed to interact when the performer plugs in audio cables and bridges connections\, much like the method of coronary artery bypass surgery. During the performance\, the storyline is lead by the sound and video of medical images and live performance from the webcam. The video and the sound also present the machine which gives instruction to the performer as a physician. The patient (the heart) who is operated on symbolises human’s conscience and faith. The performance asks a question relating to the issue of the machine and human: “If machines can reason even better than human\, will we as humans lose some abilities and even not believe ourselves anymore?” \n \nThe project was developed during the residency STEAM Imaging designed by Fraunhofer MEVIS and hosted together with Ars Electronica within the European Digital Art and Science Network. \nYen Tzu Chang (b. 1991\, TW) is a Taiwanese media artist who lives and studies in Linz\, Austria. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the new media art department of the Taipei National University of Art. Since 2014\, she has been studying for her master’s degree at the Interface Culture department of the Kunstuniversität Linz. Until now\, she has given performances and exhibited her works in many international conferences and festivals\, such as Ars Electronica Festival\, roBOt 08 Festival\, Linux Audio Conference\, ISEA\, Digital Design Weekend in London and etc. She had a touring performance with Renick Bell and Calum Gunn in Japan in 2016. Recently\, she is participating an interdisciplinary project organized by Ars Electronica and Fraunhofer MEVIS\, which including an art residency program and cooperating with the scientist – Sabrina Haase to bring the STEAM workshops for German and Austrian pupils. The residency artistic outcome has been presented at the Ars Electronica Festival 2017. \nThis event is curated by Lucia H Chung (Happened) as part of her residency with Music Hackspace\, which aims to promote and give visibility to artists from Taiwan working with sound. SUMMARY:Inferno workshop with Yen Tzu Chang
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, the artist will share brief research on the formation of the inferno and its connection to society and sound/music culture. Following this\, participants will attempt to produce the sound of the inferno\, building a sculpture with a glass jar and several layers of copper speakers\, designed with different patterns to represent the inferno in our life. A song can be heard when a magnet is passed through the middle. This workshop is suitable for a beginner who does not have a relevant background. \nParticipants should bring a laptop and headphones. It is recommended that they install Audacity and the Arduino IDE software first. These are both free and open source. It will be useful (though not essential) to have some sort of software to edit geometry\, such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape (an open source equivalent to Illustrator). \nYen Tzu Chang (b. 1991\, TW) is a Taiwanese media artist who lives and studies in Linz\, Austria. SUMMARY:Ewa Justka Presents Acid Studies with EVOL
DESCRIPTION:Acid studies workshop is a 3 day mini course where you will build Oi Kant\, a strange sounding drum-ish machine from Ewa Justka\, as well as learn how to make weird acid lines using SuperCollider with Roc Jimenez de Cisneros//EVOL. This workshop is part of Ewa Justka’s residency with Music Hackspace from March to May 2018. \nPrice: \nDay 1 (SuperCollider with EVOL): £30 \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”ewa-justka-presents-acid-studies-with-evol-day-1-supercollider-with-evol” show=”button-only”] \nDays 2 & 3 (Oi\, Kant!): £200 \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”copy-of-ewa-justka-presents-acid-studies-with-evol-day-1-supercollider-with-evol” show=”button-only”] \nAll three days: £220 \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”copy-of-acid-studies-days-2-3-april-28th-29th-oi-kant-with-ewa-justka” show=”button-only”] \nThe price includes materials and tools. \n  \nDay 1 (with Roc Jimenez de Cisneros//EVOL) – 27th April\, 18:30 – 21:30 \n→ Introduction to SuperCollider and sound synthesis (especially 303 sound synthesis) \n→ building your own sequences\, as well as Control Voltage generators (in order to sequence “Oi\, Kant!” hardware synthesiser\, which will be built during the next two days \n→ synthesising acid lines – building LFOs\, resonance filters\, envelope generators \n→ ? \n  \nDay 2 (with Ewa Justka) – 28th April\, 11:00 – 18:00 \n→ introduction to history of drum machines \n→ introduction to analog sound synthesis \n→ soldering “Oi\, Kant!” \n  \nDay 3 (with Ewa Justka) – 29th April\, 11:00 – 18:00 \n→ finishing the synthesiser and triggering it with SuperCollider (synth also works standalone) \n  \n“Oi\, Kant!” \nHave you ever wanted to become gabber producer but couldn’t be bothered with all that dutch darkness round it? Well then this machine is for you. “Oi\, kant!” isn’t a usual drum machine\, in fact\, it isn’t a drum machine at all! What is it then? Well it’s a strange patchable synthesiser\, which consists of: \n– drum voice (high and low pass filter\, decay) \n– weird (really weird ) bassline with CV control \n– resonance filter \n– cowbell with simple VCA and decay mode \n-4 separate sequencers (8 step sequencer\, bidirectional sequencer\, 2x looping sequencers) \n– each voice can be triggered with all of the above sequencers\, separately. You can also use external sequencers. \n– it has separate outputs for each voice \n– clock in \n-you can use resonance filter separately and filter any external input through it \n– with extra 10 pounds you can obtain 4 mono mini jack cables that are required for patching the machine\, otherwise you should bring your own cables \nYou can read the immanual here. \nThe synth is quite advanced\, so it would be good if you have some experience in soldering since we will be using SMD technology. This is a newly developed synth from Ewa and this will be your first chance to get your hands on one. \nWe can offer a 10% concession for students or people who are unemployed or benefit recipients. If eligible\, please email info@stagingmhs.local and we can send you a code. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them.

SUMMARY:April TidalCycles Meetup
SUMMARY:Music Hackspace presents an Algorave workshop with Alex Mclean
DESCRIPTION:[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”music-hackspace-presents-an-algorave-workshop-with-alex-mclean” show=”button-only”] \nMusic Hackspace present an Algorave workshop with Alex McLean. Algoraves are about dancing to live music made with code\, and over the last few years have become a global night-time phenomena shaping club culture. This day-long workshop will focus on livecoding music using TidalCycles\, a free/open source software project instigated by Alex. \nTidalCycles (or Tidal for short) is a programming language for live coding pattern. It allows you to make musical patterns with text\, describing sequences and ways of transforming and combining them\, exploring complex interactions between simple parts. It runs on macOS\, Windows and Linux\, and can be installed for free here. \nThis workshop will be inclusive\, assuming a basic familiarity with Tidal\, but no other experience with coding is required. If you’re a complete beginner\, but would like to attend\, we’d recommend coming to our free TidalCycles meetup on November 13th\, which should be a suitable primer for the workshop. We can also help with installation here. Alternatively\, the Tidal website has a lot of resources\, and spending a couple of hours going through these should get you up to speed. If you have any questions about this workshop\, feel free to get in touch. It will be necessary to bring headphones\, and a laptop with Tidal installed\, to take part. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nWe can offer a student discount of 10% off this workshop. Please email us for a discount code. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact info@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Hardware workshop - Wormed Voice with Martin Howse
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will run 11:00 till 17:00 on December 16th & 17th. \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”hardware-workshop-wormed-voice-with-martin-howse” show=”button-only”] \nBuild your own unique touch-based speech synthesizer and explore the theory and technique of animal and human voice synthesis. \nWormed Voice is a two day practical workshop exploring the physical\, electronic and software simulated creation of non-human voices and vocalisations. The history of speech synthesis stresses the mundane\, the military and the spectacular\, commencing with Van Kempelen’s 18th century rubber squeaking or speaking machine. The basic principle of simulating the vocal tract through electronic and physical means was submitted to the military demands of compression and encryption\, segmenting out parts of the speech process and reducing redundancy. \nIn the process communication becomes the business of circuit-bent human-worms\, opening human and animal speech to the cut-up\, to stammerings\, stutterings and tics; to an extra-human\, outer-word terrain of numbers burrowed and nibbled by the earthworms.  \nThe workshop will feast on this electronic legacy. Participants will learn the basic principles of voice synthesis and produce a custom-designed touch-speech synthesizer which they can expand at will. \nThis workshop is led by Martin Howse. Martin Howse is occupied with an investigation of the links between the earth (geophysical phenomena)\, software and the human psyche (psychogeophysics) through the construction of experimental situations (performance\, laboratories\, walks\, and workshops)\, material art works and texts.
