SUMMARY:Make music with code\, with Lucy Cheesman
DESCRIPTION:Learn to make music with code using Foxdot\, taught by Lucy Cheesman. FoxDot was created in 2015 to try and open the pathways to Live Coding for users who may be new to programming and want to use it create music quickly and easily. FoxDot is an easy-to-use Python library that creates an interactive programming environment and talks to the powerful sound synthesis engine\, called SuperCollider to make music. FoxDot schedules musical events in a user-friendly and easy-to-grasp manner that makes live coding easy and fun for both programming newcomers and veterans alike. \nRequirements: Participants should bring a laptop (OSX / Windows/ Linux)\, and a pair of headphones. Please install FoxDot in advance. You can find details on how to install here. This workshop requires no prior experience with either Foxdot or music production. \n\n \n  \nLucy Cheesman makes sound installations as part of creative collective SONA and performs live coded music using open source software solo as Heavy Lifting and in collaboration as TYPE. She also runs a record label called Pickled Discs which is dedicated to promoting experimental electronic sounds. \nShe is a board member at Access Space\, a charity for the promotion of arts and technology and is a founder member of SONA\, an organisation which supports women in music technology through creative projects. She organises and facilitates inclusive workshops and events and recently acted as project lead on a year-long initiative to build a community of practice for women in sound and music technology. Lucy was part of the 2018 cohort of the Sound and Music Composer-Curator programme\, and has also received project funding from Arts Council England and Sheffield Hallam University. \nThrough her interest in engaging marginalised groups with creative technology\, she has contributed to research showing how community building approaches can have a significant impact on redressing inequalities in digital arts. \nWe can offer a student discount of 10% off this workshop. Please email us for a discount code (workshops@stagingmhs.local). \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. If you have any questions about this event or any of our workshops please contact workshops@stagingmhs.local.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Performance: Sheryl Cheung
DESCRIPTION:Sheryl Cheung works with sound\, installation and performance to explore a material concept of life. Perceiving life as a force\, a mobility that drives our innate persistence to live\, Sheryl is especially interested in the potential of vulnerable\, ambiguous\, and internal efforts that lead us to deeper awareness of the nature of being. \n \nThrough ongoing explorations of soundscape\, energy fields\, and research into ancient and contemporary discourses on natural life\, Sheryl pursues projects that explore the space of sound as cosmological readings of today’s increasingly post-wilderness world. \nSheryl Cheung was raised in Taipei\, New York\, and Beijing. Her work has been shown at the Taipei Fine Art Museum\, Taipei Contemporary Art Center\, Lacking Sound Festival; Chronus Art Center\, Shanghai; JOLT Arts Festival\, and Jeju Art Museum\, Korea. \nThis event is curated by Lucia H Chung (Happened) as part of her residency with Music Hackspace\, which aims to promote and give visibility to artists from Taiwan working with sound. Throughout July\, August and September\, four Taiwanese artists chosen by Lucia will be taking up short term residencies at Music Hackspace and delivering workshops\, artist talks and performances. Lucia’s residency will culminate with a final night of performances in late September. \nDoors for this event will open at 18:30. The performance will begin at 19:00\, followed by a talk and Q&A. Drinks will be available from the bar next to the entrance to the New Wing of Somerset House. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them.

SUMMARY:Internal Motivations workshop with Sheryl Cheung
DESCRIPTION:Internal motivations is a workshop for new imaginations of internal martial arts through the perspective of sound. In this exercise we will explore different Taoist concepts in relation to sound and energy. Internal martial arts is a seemingly passive but internally vigorous form of martial arts that stresses on breathing\, energy circulation\, external and internal movements\, and expanded consciousness. How may the soundscape of this mind and body tradition be re-interpreted in today’s context? \n \nActivities: \n1 Listening session of film soundtracks \n2 Study of ancient martial art scores \n3 Recording your own body movements & simple collective folly techniques \n4 Creating soundscapes (can be finished later and submitted by the end of July) \nProvided materials: \n1 Excerpts of film soundtracks and martial arts documentaries \n2 Ancient scriptures that illustrate internal body movement \n3 Recordings of internal body sounds and natural forces \n4 Examples of new martial arts exercises and sounds \nIt’s recommended that participants bring a laptop. Prior experience working with music is not required.   \nWith the participant’s consent\, completed soundtracks will be compiled into a collective album and published on lololol.net\, an online platform for mind and body exercises\, which will presented in this year’s Bangkok Biennial in August. \nSheryl Cheung works with sound\, installation and performance to explore a material concept of life. Perceiving life as a force\, a mobility that drives our innate persistence to live\, Sheryl is especially interested in the potential of vulnerable\, ambiguous\, and internal efforts that lead us to deeper awareness of the nature of being. \nThrough ongoing explorations of soundscape\, energy fields\, and research into ancient and contemporary discourses on natural life\, Sheryl pursues projects that explore the space of sound as cosmological readings of today’s increasingly post-wilderness world. \nSheryl Cheung was raised in Taipei\, New York\, and Beijing. SUMMARY:Software Workshop - Make music with code\, with Joanne Armitage
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we’ll be exploring SuperCollider and its use with MIDI for interfacing both hardware and software synths. \nSuperCollider is a powerful\, open-source\, cross-platform\, audio engine and programming language\, used not only to create music\, but also for machine learning\, audio/music reactive installations\, performance\, interactive systems\, research\, live-coding and much more. \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”software-workshop-make-music-with-code-with-joanne-armitage” show=”button-only”] \nRequirements: You will need your own computer (OSX / Windows/ Linux)\, a pair of headphones\, MIDI interface\, MIDI cable and if possible a synth that accepts MIDI signals. We will have a few midi/synth setups available for use in the workshop. Please email us ahead of booking if you will need to use one of ours. \nJoanne is a creative technologist and artist working with sound\, physical computing\, digital media and interaction design. Her current practice-based research explores how digital sound can connect with the body through haptic feedback. She is part of livecoding duo Algobabez with Shelly Knotts. \nThe venue is located on the ground floor of Somerset House and is fully wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. If you have any other access requirements\, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nIf you have any questions about this event or any of our workshops please contact workshops@stagingmhs.local. \nPhoto by Antonio Roberts (http://www.hellocatfood.com/) \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”software-workshop-make-music-with-code-with-joanne-armitage” show=”button-only”]
