SUMMARY:SuperCollider with Holger Ballweg – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016
DESCRIPTION:8th June 19:00 – 21:00 @MachinesRoom\nSuperCollider with Holger Ballweg \n\n\nBuy SuperCollider with Holger Ballweg – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016\nCollaborative live coding in SuperCollider. \nCollaboration in live computer music in general results in interesting performances\, as the styles of the performers merge and/or network effects\, e.g.\, delays in the delivery of network packages\, are exploited. SuperCollider comes with very good support for networking using OSC messages (Open Sound Control – a standard that enables exchanging messages between different computer music applications easily) and additional libraries make it even easier to collaborate. \nWe will explore different levels of collaboration\, specifically: \n– collaborative editing of sound-producing code;\n– sharing code between performers;\n– sharing data between performers\, e.g.\, a musical scale or a common tempo;\n– using and abusing the client-server architecture of SuperCollider to\, e.g.\, play sound on other people’s machines. \nWe will learn how to set them up\, play around with them\, and look at examples of them in use – and look at ways to debug them if things go wrong. \nYou will need your own computer (OSX / Windows/ Linux)\, and a pair of headphones. \n  \nHolger Ballweg is a live coder and programmer living in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). \nAfter studying for an M.A. in Music Informatics at Karlsruhe University of Music (Germany)\, he is now pursuing a PhD at Northumbria University\, Newcastle. \nHe is a member of the live coding laptop band Benoît and the Mandelbrots\, with whom he performed over 70 concerts in Germany and Europe exploring different ways of collaboration using SuperCollider\, which resulted in the development of their own collaborative live coding library\, BenoitLib. In 2012 Benoît and the Mandelbrots received an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica. He is also part of the Birmingham Laptop Ensemble (BiLE) and occasionally plays the laptop or saxophone in a duo with Shelly Knotts. As project assistant of the Network Music Festival in 2013 and 2014 he helped realise diverse networked and collaborative performances\, as well as being a participant in some of them. \n  \nSuperCollider is an incredibly powerful\, open-source\, cross-platform\, audio engine and programming language\, used not only to create music\, but also for machine listening\, audio/music reactive installations\, performance\, interactive systems\, research\, live-coding and much more. \nThis workshop is part of #SoundUnfolded taking place in the Machines Room classroom. \n  \n\n\nBuy SuperCollider with Holger Ballweg – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016\nSupported using public funding by Arts Council England

SUMMARY:SuperCollider with Alo Allik – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016
DESCRIPTION:Sound synthesis and interactive algorithmic composition with machine learning in SuperCollider \nWednesday 11th May 19:00 – 21:00\nThis workshop takes place in Machines Room (Classroom). Address: 45 Vyner St\, London E2 9DQ \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”supercollider-with-alo-allik-sound-unfolded-workshops-2016″ show=”button-only”] \n  \nIn this workshop we will explore the basics of sound synthesis and algorithmic composition with a particular emphasis on creating interactive synthesizers with machine listening techniques and aiding the composition process with machine learning algorithms. The flexible SuperCollider architecture enables exploring real-time composition from a number of different perspectives. We will be exploring the following topics: \n \n– sound synthesis including modulation\, subtractive and granular synthesis\n– strategies for scheduling and timing\n– building reactive synthesisers with triggers and machine listening\n– introduction to composition with machine learning \n \nAlo Allik is a sound artist who has performed his audiovisual works\, electroacoustic compositions\, eclectic DJ sets and live electronic music throughout the world at a number of festivals\, including Transmediale\, Piksel\, ISEA\, TodaysArt\, ShinyToys\, Pluto\, NIME\, etc.. His aesthetically and geographically restless lifestyle has enabled him to traverse a diverse range of musical worlds including DJ-ing electronic dance music\, live electronic jam sessions\, electroacoustic composition\, free improvisation and audiovisual performances. In recent years he has been actively participating in the Algorave movement developing a style he describes as noisefunk which combines traditional rhythm patterns with evolutionary synthesis algorithms. Currently\, Alo works as a researcher at the Centre for Digital Music\, Queen Mary University of London\, while continuing to perform his visuals and music to audiences worldwide. \nwebsite: http://tehis.net\nsoundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tehis\nhttps://soundcloud.com/user-665948413 \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported with public funding by Arts Council England.
