In this seminar: Lia Mice presents design considerations for creating large-scale gesturally performed digital musical instruments. Lia will introduce her award winning large instrument Chaos Bells, created as part of Lia’s PhD research which focuses on the impact of instrument size on music performance. Lia will discuss how Chaos Bells was conceived and constructed, its role in Lia’s research and creative practice, and what designers of instruments of all sizes can learn from this instrument.

The event will also be livestreamed on the Music hackspace YouTube channel for those who can’t make it IRL

2021 Oram Award winner Lia Mice is expanding the boundaries of electronic music production and digital musical instrument design. Mice's futuristic-industrial aesthetic can be experienced at her live AV sets where she performs with her self-designed metallic sculptural large-scale digital instrument Chaos Bells. She has performed her instruments and live A/V sets at such venues as The Barbican, the ICA, the V&A Museum, Ars Electronica Festival, the Tate Modern, WOMB (Tokyo) and the Museum of Arts and Design (New York). Chaos Bells won the Highly Commended award for Best Innovation in a Sound Tool or Technique at the 2021 Sound Of The Year Awards. Lia's new album Sweat Like Caramel is out on Objects Ltd. on the 20th of May.
