Membership plan: Getting Started | Topics: Creative Coding
Course overview
Saturday 26th April 6pm UK
This hands-on workshop introduces Max 9’s new REPL (Read-Eval-Print Loop) features for live coding audiovisual performances. Participants will learn how to use REPL as a command-line interface to manipulate Jitter-based visuals and audio in real-time, exploring its potential for improvisation, interactivity, and performance. We’ll cover techniques for structuring a live audiovisual patch, integrating scripting elements, and incorporating artistic strategies for dynamic, real-time control. A stretch goal includes discussing potential Max for Live and Ableton integration.
By the end of the session, participants will have experimented with Max 9’s REPL features and built an audiovisual patch designed for live performance. They’ll leave with a working template—annotated and interactable—to further develop in their own practice. Framing the workshop from a performance-driven perspective, we’ll also discuss creative approaches to structuring a live set, how notation systems influence artistic expression, and the broader cultural dimensions of live coding. The session will include guided exercises, discussion, and hands-on experimentation, encouraging frequent interaction with Max as a performative tool.
