Please note this £20 booking fee won’t be refunded in case of you cancelling / not showing. \nThanks for the reservation and see you soon! We will be in touch with you to confirm registration and provide further details. \nMore information: \nDuring the last past years\, the radio world has witnessed the rise of numerous initiatives related to the hybridization of traditional radio means with digital standards and systems\, nourishing and renewing the classic radio-amateur practises and approaches such as pirate satellite brazilian radios http://www.wired.com/2009/04/fleetcom/?currentPage=all \nBut even if technical protocols such as Software Defined Radio (SDR)\, streaming and p2p decentralized practices have opened new perspectives\, it is mostly the recent new political approaches of radio\, such as Kogawa’s MicroFM [A Micro Radio Manifesto http://anarchy.translocal.jp/radio/micro/o] or the Telecomix Internet radio initiative [http://telecomix.org/] that have unveiled new exciting territories. \nNowadays\, radio is -in its digital transformation\, far from the unidirectional relationship with the listener of the FM band. It is open to very local broadcast and wild transmissions over large spectrum\, carrying both sounds and data\, and offering to rethink its architecture on the principles of rhizomatic and meshed networks. \nFollowing the Π-Node experiments [https://www.p-node.org]\, this workshop proposes to explore the use of RTL-SDR antennas: \n\nprimary conceived for TNT television reception [dongle based on the RTL2832U chipset http://www.rtl-sdr.com/about-rtl-sdr/]\nsubverted to the reception of various signals from the radio spectrum from 20MHz to 2000MHz.\n\nThe antenna will be receiving waves of data messages\, encoded through Minimodem [http://www.whence.com/minimodem/] \nA Raspberry Pi will be transformed in a radio transmitter\, using the GPIO 4 and the PiFM software [PiFM: http://icrobotics.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Turning_the_Raspberry_Pi_Into_an_FM_Transmitter] \nParticipants willl use and connect those tools and techniques\, in order to create a chain of radio data relays\, and trying ultimately to subvert it by various means (radio interferences\, sound transformation\, data capture and text substitution\, etc…). \nPrevious knowledge \nParticipants shall have a basic knowledge of command line programming and a wide curiosity for radio phenomenons. \nLanguages used will be python\, but can also be programmed in other various langages (ruby\, java\, c++\, etc …) \nThis workshop will be led by RYBN.ORG \nRYBN.ORG is an extra-disciplinary artistic research platform\, funded in 2000 as a web entity\, disseminated into several servers all over the internet and physically present in Paris. RYBN.ORG operates through interactive & networked installations\, digital/analog visual cross-performances and pervasive computing. Their projects refer as well to the codified systems of the artistic representation (aesthetic\, painting\, architecture\, avant-garde\, music) as to the socio-politic and physical phenomenons\, exploring various fields such as economics\, data mass analysis\, perverted artificial intelligence\, disrupting auto-learning\, language and syntaxes\, sensory perception and cognitive systems.  \nhttp://www.rybn.org \nThis workshop is part of #SoundUnfolded #ACE funded. \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:SuperCollider with Holger Ballweg – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016
DESCRIPTION:8th June 19:00 – 21:00 @MachinesRoom\nSuperCollider with Holger Ballweg \n\n\nBuy SuperCollider with Holger Ballweg – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016\nCollaborative live coding in SuperCollider. \nCollaboration in live computer music in general results in interesting performances\, as the styles of the performers merge and/or network effects\, e.g.\, delays in the delivery of network packages\, are exploited. SuperCollider comes with very good support for networking using OSC messages (Open Sound Control – a standard that enables exchanging messages between different computer music applications easily) and additional libraries make it even easier to collaborate. \nWe will explore different levels of collaboration\, specifically: \n– collaborative editing of sound-producing code;\n– sharing code between performers;\n– sharing data between performers\, e.g.\, a musical scale or a common tempo;\n– using and abusing the client-server architecture of SuperCollider to\, e.g.\, play sound on other people’s machines. \nWe will learn how to set them up\, play around with them\, and look at examples of them in use – and look at ways to debug them if things go wrong. \nYou will need your own computer (OSX / Windows/ Linux)\, and a pair of headphones. \n  \nHolger Ballweg is a live coder and programmer living in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). \nAfter studying for an M.A. in Music Informatics at Karlsruhe University of Music (Germany)\, he is now pursuing a PhD at Northumbria University\, Newcastle. \nHe is a member of the live coding laptop band Benoît and the Mandelbrots\, with whom he performed over 70 concerts in Germany and Europe exploring different ways of collaboration using SuperCollider\, which resulted in the development of their own collaborative live coding library\, BenoitLib. In 2012 Benoît and the Mandelbrots received an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica. He is also part of the Birmingham Laptop Ensemble (BiLE) and occasionally plays the laptop or saxophone in a duo with Shelly Knotts. As project assistant of the Network Music Festival in 2013 and 2014 he helped realise diverse networked and collaborative performances\, as well as being a participant in some of them. \n  \nSuperCollider is an incredibly powerful\, open-source\, cross-platform\, audio engine and programming language\, used not only to create music\, but also for machine listening\, audio/music reactive installations\, performance\, interactive systems\, research\, live-coding and much more. \nThis workshop is part of #SoundUnfolded taking place in the Machines Room classroom. \n  \n\n\nBuy SuperCollider with Holger Ballweg – Sound Unfolded Workshops 2016\nSupported using public funding by Arts Council England

Address: 45 Vyner St\, London E2 9DQ \n[shopify embed_type=”product” shop=”musichackspace.myshopify.com” product_handle=”supercollider-with-alo-allik-sound-unfolded-workshops-2016″ show=”button-only”] \n  \nIn this workshop we will explore the basics of sound synthesis and algorithmic composition with a particular emphasis on creating interactive synthesizers with machine listening techniques and aiding the composition process with machine learning algorithms. The flexible SuperCollider architecture enables exploring real-time composition from a number of different perspectives. We will be exploring the following topics: \n \n– sound synthesis including modulation\, subtractive and granular synthesis\n– strategies for scheduling and timing\n– building reactive synthesisers with triggers and machine listening\n– introduction to composition with machine learning \n \nAlo Allik is a sound artist who has performed his audiovisual works\, electroacoustic compositions\, eclectic DJ sets and live electronic music throughout the world at a number of festivals\, including Transmediale\, Piksel\, ISEA\, TodaysArt\, ShinyToys\, Pluto\, NIME\, etc.. His aesthetically and geographically restless lifestyle has enabled him to traverse a diverse range of musical worlds including DJ-ing electronic dance music\, live electronic jam sessions\, electroacoustic composition\, free improvisation and audiovisual performances. In recent years he has been actively participating in the Algorave movement developing a style he describes as noisefunk which combines traditional rhythm patterns with evolutionary synthesis algorithms. Currently\, Alo works as a researcher at the Centre for Digital Music\, Queen Mary University of London\, while continuing to perform his visuals and music to audiences worldwide. \nwebsite: http://tehis.net\nsoundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tehis\nhttps://soundcloud.com/user-665948413 \n  \nThe Music Hackspace programme is supported with public funding by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Workshop: build your own SIGNUM device and reveal hidden sounds
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop participants will build and take home their own Signum device\, which is designed to experiment with hidden signals and usually un-hearable sounds. The device includes a transducer\, optical\, coil\, germanium diode and small loop antenna that will allow you to both to listen to and record the sounds hidden in the electromagnetic spectrum. The workshop will also cover the use of the electromagnetic spectrum in art practice. \nWith Victor Mazon Gardoqui. \nSignum is a portable device designed to provide a clean\, line level & micro controller friendly output signal to various input sensors: different bandwidth antennas\, high impedance transducers\, photosensitive cells\, infrared\, ultraviolet\, sound pressure or line level. \nThe electromagnetic spectrum will be used as a creative resource where participants will build a device capable of modulate the invisible phenomenæ on various media or devices. \n  \n \nSIGNUM_Portable Analog Instrumentation Amplifier from animazon on Vimeo. \nSIGNUM performs a fully analogue difference operation between its input and reference output level\, multipling by a factor of 100 times in the first stage  -controlable by potenciometer- and 10 times magnification on its second stage\, providing a controlled amplitude output line suitable to be safely connected to any audio input: sound card\, computer or mixer\, providing the input signal a maximum magnification ratio of 1000: 1 and a signal-to-noise distortion of 0.007% THD. \nThe kit contains two amplifier circuits operating in parallel to accommodate different impedances of sensors and a final amplification for line output. The 3 sensors embedded on its surface measures close range electromagnetic frequencies\, a central SMA antenna connector for long-range signals and an external line input via the 3.5mm jack to amplify self made sensors and physical devices.\nIt´s powered by a 9V battery or supplied 1\,3mm power jack to USB connector. \nThe workshop will be lead by Victor Mazon Gardoqui who’s the author of workshop concept\, electronics design & documentation | CC 4.0 BY-SA ://victormazon.com/signum \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nSIGNUM Portable Analog Instrumentation Amplifier \nSpecifications:\nVoltage gain 10 to 1000 (w/ ALPS potentiometer)\nAmplitude control (w/ ALPS potentiometer)\nBandwidth set to 15.9kHz (w/feedback capacitors)\, or 100kHz (w/ caps removed)\nLine IN / Line OUT (w/ Jack 3\,5mm)\nSMA Antenna Input\nSelf-centering output quiescent voltageBattery operation ~3V–30V\n1\,3mm power jack to USB cable included\n220v to 5v USB adaptor included\nCurrent drain ≤160mA\nSize 70×70 mm\n8x 30mm. metal stands\nSensors: transducer\, optical\, coil\, germanium diode\, small loop antenna included\nIndustrial PCB manufacture\nMaterial FR4\nThickness 1\,6mm\nSurface Finish ENIG Immersion Gold  on both sides\nBlack Matt Soldermask on both Sides \nWhen: Saturday 24th October: 11h to 19 h and Sunday 25th October 11h to 15h. \nRequired skills: No previous experience in electronics is necessary\, but interest and patience mandatory. \nCost: 95 GBP (All electronic materials and documentation included). \nEnquiries: please email workshops@stagingmhs.local \n\n\nBuy SIGNUM – Workshop on presence\, perception and noise

SUMMARY:Rebel Technology Modular Synth Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Build your own Rebel Technology synthesizer modules at the Music Hackspace! We are pleased to present a workshop in Eurorack module building by London-based manufacturer Rebel Technology.\nYou don’t have to have previous experience with soldering or electronics\, we will be there throughout to help you with any difficulties. \nOver the course of the day we will guide you through the construction of a module of your choice\, explain how it works and help you with any assembly problems you might have. \nThe modules on offer are easy to build. They include all electrical components and other parts\, and come with professionally made front panels and PCBs. There is no fee for the workshop\, you only pay for the kits that you want to build. \nYou can choose between some of Rebel’s most popular modules: \nStoicheia : Euclidean beat sequencer……….£90 \nLogoi : voltage controlled clock delay and divider (swing / shuffle)………. £95 \nKlasmata : voltage controlled beat sequencer………. £95 \nThese modules are great for turning a clock signal into a compelling and musical beat pattern. They are designed to complement each other\, but each one functions perfectly well on its own and in combination with other modules. \nIf you are comfortable building kits and have good soldering experience then you will be able to build more than one. \nAll our modules are open source: hardware and firmware. This means they’re endlessly customisable! If you are interested in microcontroller programming then we can help you modify the code. The panels are reversible\, which means that you can draw your own design if you like. Double or triple length sequences\, random patterns or reassigned knobs\, anyone? \nMore information about the modules can be found here: http://www.rebeltech.org/modules/ \nPlease book your place via: workshops@stagingmhs.local
